The word LAGOS means different things to different people.
To some it’s simply the most populous city in Africa, to some it’s the economic capital of Nigeria, some still see it as the first seat of power in Nigeria while most see Lagos as the entertainment capital of Africa.
Depending on your perspective, Lagos can mean anything and many things to you, but how has this GREAT city affected the growth of Entertainment in the country?
There’s a myth in the Nigerian entertainment industry that says, ‘for you to make it big and become a superstar, you MUST reside in Lagos’.

Believe it or not, this myth has been the driving force and key to success for countless showbiz stars, most of whom began their various careers outside Lagos but didn’t achieve stardom till they relocated to Lagos.
Some of them include Timaya (from Bayelsa), MI Abaga (Jos), Phyno (Enugu), and many more.
Lagos has given the world the biggest hits from the continent for decades. Lagos is also home to the most successful music labels on the continent.

Some of the biggest music and Nollywood stars call Lagos home, from Genevieve to RMD and Femi Kuti. Even the Ghanaians and South Africans are here as often as they can.

Of course Lagos gave us Africa Magic!
The city of Lagos has been conspicuously designed as an unparalleled haven for showbiz. Everything and almost everyone you need to succeed in entertainment is in Lagos.

For many years, all the private-owned radio stations and tv stations used to have offices only in Lagos.
Lagos does not have the big domes of Johannesburg and Sun City. But there’s a gig here everyday of the week. The MAMAs have held here twice, and the continent’s biggest movie award AMVCA has held here since inception.
All the MEGA events and red carpets you need to walk to be seen and noticed in entertainment happens in Lagos. So if you need that visibility, attention and network with the top stars you somehow need to find your way to these events.
In recent times, corporate brands tried to take events to other parts of the country, but its not enough.

The popularity of Lagos and its influence in entertainment transcends the shores of Africa. There’s hardly any international act that visits Nigeria and ignores Lagos.
There’s however a growing argument underground and many questions that need answers.
Is the Lagos factor hampering the growth of entertainment in other regions?
Or is the over concentration of avenues for entertainment in Lagos partly the reason for the boom of the industry in recent years?
