Burna Boy picked up his first-ever Grammy award for ‘Best Global Music Album’ at the 63rd Grammys in Los Angeles last night amidst much celebration. That singular victory makes him the first homegrown Nigerian to achieve that feat.
Wizkid also picked up his first Grammy award after winning ‘Best Video’ for his collaboration with Beyonce on ‘Brown Skin Girl’.
South African comedian and host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah, hosted the show. He began by telling jokes about how Corona virus has changed the Grammys.
It was the biggest virtual gathering of some of the biggest names in music from across the world. There were performances from 42 of the biggest music stars, including our very own Burna Boy. Other performers included Harry Styles, Cardi B, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Meghan Thee Stallion, BTS, Bruno Mars, Lil Baby, Anderson Paak, amongst others.
There was a particularly memorable tribute performance for the artistes that passed away since the last Grammy ceremony. It featured Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak, Lionel Richie, Brandi Carlile, Brittany Howard, and Chris Martin.
Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé tied for the most wins, each taking home three awards each. Megan received the Grammys for ‘Best Rap Song’, ‘Best Rap Performance’, and ‘Best New Artiste’.
Beyonce who received the highest nominations with nine nods went home with three wins for ‘Best Music Video’, ‘Best Rap Song’, and ‘Best R&B Performance’. She also broke the record for female artiste with the most Grammys. She picked up her 28th Grammy award for ‘Black Parade’.
