It was a spectacular night for Nigerian music as Burna Boy and Wizkid each took home a Grammy.
Burna took home a Grammy for Best Global Music Album with his album, Twice As Fall. This is his second nomination as he was nominated last year for Best World Music Album but lost out to Angelique Kidjo. This year, Burna Boy won and delivered a very memorable performance.
Wizkid also made history with his first Grammy win for Best Music video for Brown Skin Girl, his collaboration with Beyonce. It is his second nomination as he was nominated Best Album for his work on Views with Drake. Wizkid FC set social media ablaze in celebration.
The 63rd Grammy ceremony was a big night for Nigerian music, with these three artistes taking home awards. Previously, there had been several Nigerian artistes with Grammy nominations and no wins.
King Sunny Ade is a two-time Grammy nominee for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording for his work, Syncro System in 1984, and Best World Music Album for Odu in 1999.
The Kuti brothers have also received Grammy nominations: Femi Kuti has four Grammy nominations for Best World Music Album in 2003, 2010, 2012, and 2014, while his brother Seun Kuti received a nomination in the same category in 2018.
Finally, the Grammy award comes home to Nigeria, and we have Wizkid and Burna Boy to thank for that.
