In respect to the case, a public report was sent by LASTMA buttressing that the lady really did commit the crime and she was taken into custody at the SCID Panti.
However, few hours after the report hit the media, eyewitnesses brought forth contrary evidence to prove the accused woman innocent. There were not only pictures but as claimed, there were also video shots of the accident, which showed that the deceased officer was knocked down by an oncoming danfo bus while trying to cross the express way.
With clear evidence proving the accused innocent, Johnson who was on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 charged to court for traffic violation which was really her only crime, was fined the sum of N50,ooo, and allowed to go home.
However, while the case is closed, certain questions are left unanswered.
In the first place, why would the LASTMA officials be quick to declare a person guilty without first confirming? Secondly, what would have been the fate of Johnson if those undisputable evidences had not turned up? Thirdly, would she be right to sue LASTMA for defamation of character, emotional trauma etc?
While still pondering on these and many more, Nigerians have aired their views on the matter, with unrestrained condemnation on the approach of LASTMA officials on the road while carrying out their duties. Motorists within Lagos metropolis complained bitterly of the way these transport officials jump in front of a moving vehicle daring them to stop; often times, risking getting knocked down.
Furthermore, the unverified report issued by LASTMA and reported by the media has been out rightly condemned.
It then brings one question to mind; if not for those who witnessed the incident and had visual proof, would Yinka Johnson not have been another case of an innocent victim whose life would have been forever derailed?
