The story was that a Chinese woman was such a smart dater that she got each of her 20 boyfriends to buy her an iPhone 7 which she then sold and used the money to buy a house. BBC first carried the story after which other major news outlets carried it.

You know what’s better than 20 iphones? Selling 20 iPhones for roughly $17,703.95 and getting A HOUSE, people. https://t.co/1uJ5nSs3bPpic.twitter.com/JDuXtNr5Pg

Well, don’t worry your head too much. Buzzfeed News is reporting that the source of the news is not to be trusted. According to them, the story was circulated by an internet user by the name of Proud Chopper who works for a phone recycling company, Huishoubao Tech.
The only problem is, only before the news went viral, Huishoubao posted a recruitment notice on a Chinese job application website looking for ‘event marketing personnel’, in which one requirement says potential applicants need to be ‘passionate about producing internet events’ and familiar with ‘methods of media manipulation’.
Looks like they found the perfect employee who succeeded in manipulating the world media into spreading the story they wanted. No wonder there was no photo of the said woman, or her house or any of her ‘boyfriends’.
