As students of the University of Lagos are still recovering from the killing of one of their students that took place last week, another shooting by unknown armed men has taken place around the campus, leaving one student dead.
On Tuesday, February 22, 2011, word circulated that a student had just been buried at Atan Cemetary, close to the campus in Yaba, Lagos. This prompted investigations and soon enough it was discovered that the boy, Ayodeji Sonoiki, a student of the Department of History and Strategic Studies in the Faculty of Arts had been shot and killed by gunmen on Friday, February 18, 2011.
We gathered from his friends who want to remain anonymous that Ayodeji was with his cousins drinking at a local pub called Ben Johnson located in Yaba when armed men stormed the place and fired several shots into the air.
As people fell flat on the ground for safety, a drunken Ayodeji reportedly remained calm and ignored the gunmen. His action angered one of them who thought Ayodeji wasn’t taking them serious. He was shot and killed.
Sources say Sonoiki was spending an extra year in school due to the incompletion of his project and had celebrated his 22 birthday earlier this month. He was the former treasurer of the Historical Society of Nigeria, UNILAG Chapter and was described as ‘an easy going person’.
