NETPod: Sunny Neji Returns With ‘Lovey Dovey’

Let’s go back into time…Yes it’s 1997 again, you are in the living room watching TV when Sunny Neji‘s ‘Mr Fantastik‘ video comes on. Ha, you can’t help but recite those words line for line, with the bass guitar hitting you in the core of your spin, you readily adjust and start swaying to the classic high-life sound.

Sunny Neji held it down for highlife music from the 90s through to the new millennium. He 1997 album ‘Mr Fantastik‘ was so successful that we didn’t remember to question him when he didn’t release another album for the next six years. But when he did with the follow up album ‘Unchained‘ which produced the hit songs ‘Oruka‘, ‘Tolotolo‘ and ‘Face me‘, people forgot about the questions and hit the dance floor.

Another album ‘Off Da Hook‘ saw Neji keep the momentum with songs like ‘Abosede‘ and the ballad ‘Still the only one‘. They might not have toppled the last two efforts but the highlife maestro wasn’t losing steam. Then there was the extended Lp ‘Rock Steady‘ and the disappointing ‘Pin No 91011‘ which could only muster up two lukewarm singles – the satirical ‘Obokun‘ and the mid-tempo ‘Ojoro‘.

Well another two years has gone by since his last release; Mr Fantastik is back and ready to win back any fans he lost to the new school highlife acts. His new single ‘Lovey dovey‘ is vintage Sunny Neji. He sings about how the modern gadgets which man now uses to communicate (more than usual) cannot replace the physical presence of a loved one.

‘I no want facebook love, BB love… no take internet dey cover to deceive you lover…/ Computer no fit take the place of lovey dovey..’, are the words Neji sings out. Easy going, it’s safe to safe that Sunny Neji is back!

The forthcoming album ‘Timeless’ which features production from of Adebayo Cean Joseph, Dapiano, Bright, Phat-E and Samklef will released under Impact Records
