Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems’ hit single, Damages, has emerged as the ‘Most Played Alternative Song’ at the NET Honours People’s Choice Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious audience data-based awards.
NET Honours is an annual people’s choice award event that recognises top performers and events in the entertainment industry and public sector that have shaped the year through a thorough analysis of audience search results, consumer interest, social media interactions and trends.
The Most Played Alternative Song award is one of five new music categories introduced into the NET Honours Class of 2021. These new music categories are based on verifiable data supplied by Corrents, a Nigerian music analytics startup that analyses data from airplay on over 100 local radio stations and streaming platforms. The award categories celebrate the most played songs in Nigeria during the year in review (June 2020 to May 2021) and include songs across five genres: Pop, Hip-Hop, Alternative, Street Hop and Soul.
Tems and her hit song, Damages, beat out four other successful alternative songs to secure a spot in the ‘Class of 2021’. Other songs nominated in the same category include: DJ Kaywise and Phyno’s High Way, Burna Boy’s Way Too Big and Wonderful, and Master KG’s monster hit Jerusalema.
Tems released her debut EP, For Broken Ears, in September 2020 amid the pandemic. She received much love from the listening public and praises from critics. Her collaboration with Wizkid on ‘Essence’, off the singer’s ‘Made In Lagos’ album, also earned her global fame. Her single, Damages, off the EP, has surpassed 6 million streams on Spotify and YouTube and close to 12 million plays on Audiomack as of date.
Data for NET Honours is sourced from a comprehensive database of over eight million users who engaged with Netng, Neusroom, Orin and 234Star platforms via the websites, social media accounts, and related platforms within a 12-month calendar period.
Congratulations Tems!
