Temilade Opaniyi, popularly called Tems, is an alternative singer, songwriter, and producer. ‘From Broken Ears’ is her first body of work. One big fan, Ifeoluwa Adeyemo talks us through her debut EP.
Here’s her top five cuts from what’s already been described by many as an exceptionally good album.
5. Interference
This song opens the album and I love it. Tems allows us to absorb her powerful voice and poetic lyrics. “If you couldn’t be reminded, baby girl I’m gon’ remind you now.” This line will have you shouting at your haters with your middle finger in the air. I love that the instrumentals weren’t too heavy, so we could hear everything Tems said. The simplicity of this song is everything!
4. Temilade Interlude
Awww, who is cutting onions! This track was about Tems mother explaining the process surrounding her birth. Nothing screams support more than family.
On this track, we hear her mother saying she knew she was a girl before anyone believed it. The back story is adorable and relatable. And it’s so so sweet to know that her mother named her ‘the crown is mine’ – Temilade.
3. Ice T
When I saw this song, I thought it had something to do with Ice-T from Ice & Coco, but it’s about making Ice tea out of lemons, not lemonade, who would have thought?
I connect with this song a lot because it reminds me of my exes. You know that feeling when you think someone loves you but they don’t. Hearing Tems sing about this reminded me that I’m a queen, and I deserve better. I also like how her vocals, and the music, are eclectic.
2. Damages
I love the vibe of this song. It was released before the EP and gained a lot of attention. This is the type of song you send to that ex that comes back begging after doing you dirty. When Tems said, “Don’t call my phone, you’re not a mad man.” Damn! I felt that.
As the saying goes, men will shame you.
1. Free mind
This is my favorite so far. I feel like many people will connect with this, in terms of everything that has happened this year. It reminds us of the peace we all crave badly. This song will likely give us one of the biggest social media buzzwords of the year ‘Free Mind’. It is such a powerful song.
Overall Ratings
Tems voice is so unique and powerful and it’s no surprise that there are no features on the EP. I believe this project is timeless. This album is not one to run up the charts to do numbers. It is one that you can always run to when you feel down or can’t find your feet in the world.
I like that this album is not too long or short. After listening to ‘For Broken Ears,’ I will rate it a 9 out of 10. Tems is about to be called amongst the most prominent female stars globally, and I am here for that. Go, girl!
