One of the music industry’s most inspiring lovebirds Simi and Adekunle Gold have been announced winners of NET Honours ‘Most Popular Couple’ category.
NET Honours is an annual people’s choice award that recognises top performers and events in the entertainment industry and public sector that have shaped the year through a thorough analysis of audience search results, consumer interest, social media interactions and trends.
Simi and Adekunle Gold met for the first time in 2013 at Bogobiri Lounge, Ikoyi. They officially began to date in 2014 but kept it under wraps as they focused on their respective music careers. They worked together on several projects, and Simi mixed and mastered Adekunle Gold’s debut album Gold. They tied the knot at a low-key beach wedding in January 2019 and welcomed their first child, Adejare, in May 2020. The two keep their lives private but occasionally share sweet moments and words on social media, and the fans live for such rare occasions.
Adekunle Gold and Simi took the title this year as the ‘Most Popular Couple’ over other power couples – The Bellos (Funke Akindele and JJC), The Wellingtons (Adesua Etomi and Banky W), and The Suleimans (Linda Ejiofor and Ibrahim Suleiman). Newcomers and Big Brother Naija lovebirds Neo and Vee were also nominated in this category.
Simi and Adekunle Gold finally take home this win after receiving their second NET Honours People’s Choice Awards nomination for ‘Most Popular Couple’. They lost out last year to BBNaija’s Mercy Eke and Ike Onyeama.
The NET Honours People’s Choice Awards are based on engagement from over 8 million internet users reached across websites, social media and related channels of Netng, Neusroom, 234Star and Orin between June 2020 and May 2021. The event celebrates musicians, actors, comedians, reality TV stars, events and public personalities who are subjects of Nigeria’s most exciting conversations in the year under review.
