Reports had it that the ‘boys’ attempted ‘assassinating’ the former president at his resident in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
However, state police spokesperson Butswat Asinim has set the record straight.
‘There was no confrontation at all,’ Asinim told Newsroom during a phone call on Monday.
‘The boys mistaken Jonathan’s convoy for one of their political godfather’s convoy,’ he said and declined identifying the APC godfather in question.
‘When they followed Jonathan’s convoy, they finally discovered that this was the former president, and not the godfather they thought,’ he said.
He said the boys were five in number and were driving a vehicle which carried a small APC flag.
‘Jonathan was not attacked; there was nothing of such,’ the state police spokesperson said.
‘The former president was not attacked. It was a case of mistaken identity. The boys thought they were following one of their bosses.
‘When they discovered that it was Jonathan they stopped. The police raised an alarm and the boys were arrested.
‘There were five of them in a vehicle which carried one small APC flag. The boys are not militants and they are not thugs. They are likely APC supporters who joined the convoy because they thought he was a member of their party.
‘There was no confrontation at all,’ he said.
The ‘boys’ were probably getting in the mood ahead of the December 5 Bayelsa governorship election.
