Two officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (popularly called LASTMA) have been caught on tape collecting a bribe from a commercial bus driver on the streets of Lagos State on April 6, 2014.
The video published on YouTube by Sahara TV starts with two LASTMA officials talking with a bus driver at where is believed to be Ojota bus stop. It looks like the driver who was heading to Yaba had committed a traffic offence; the officials had also asked the passengers in the ‘danfo‘ bus to alight.
After they’ve settled, the LASTMA official asks the passengers to return into the bus. The driver then approaches the official and gives him a ‘handshake’, passing him a Naira note.
When the recorder of the video asks the driver how much he gave the official, he replies ‘1,000‘.
NET reached out to LASTMA over the matter. The traffic management authority said they were not aware of the situation or the video.
We then sent the link to one of their reps, one Mr Apena who told us ‘we have watched it and are currently looking into it‘.
And what will be the fate of the official if his identity is revealed? Apena says it’s bad news: ‘It’s a civil service procedure. He’ll get a query then face a disciplinary and most likely be dismissed‘.
