R&B, Reggae and Dancehall artiste Kevin Wyre is the only Kenyan artiste nominated in the 2014 World Music Award for the World’s Best Act.
The music producer and C.E.O. of Lovechild Records, speaks with NET about his upcoming album, possible collaborations with Nigerian artistes and his 20-year musical journey.
How did you get to where you are in the music industry?
Years of hard work, prayer and persistence. Also, by being principled.
Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?
My favourite artist is Damian Marley. I love his music because he brought a new fresh sound to reggae and dancehall. He is also a strong believer in positive music.
What has your musical journey been like?
I have been doing music professionally for 20 years now. The industry has changed quite a bit. We struggled to get airplay while starting out, but that has all changed and the demand for African music has really grown.
Which famous musicians have you learned from?
I learnt from Michael Jackson that you are never too old to be the best in what you do. He died at 50 years old still rehearsing for 8 hours a day! Now, that’s what I call dedication.
What’s the first instrument you fell in love with?
My first instrument was the piano. I started out young and it really helped with my production skills.
What are your fondest musical memories?
One of my fondest musical memories is performing & recording at Tuff Gong studios in Kingston Jamaica. Also, winning the International Reggae Award for Best New Entertainer.
How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
Normally, if I make a mistake during a performance I will interact with the crowd more or tell them to throw their hands in the air or something!
Do you get nervous before a performance?
I never get nervous before a performance. I started performing at a really early age so I got used to it.
What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?
Beginners should know that every star had to start from somewhere. Confidence comes with time and experience.
What makes a good session?
My studio sessions are very random. I prefer not to write my songs before I hear the beat in the studio. When I hear the beat, that determines the direction the song will take.
Do you teach music?
I am currently mentoring three artistes that I have signed onto my label. I would like to get their careers to a place that it will sustain them.
How do you balance music with other obligations — wife, children, job?
I always make sure that no matter how busy my career gets, my family is my priority.
How does it feel to be the only Kenyan artiste in the World Music Award’s World’s Best Act category?
It’s a great honour to be nominated in the World Music Awards. I’ve gotten overwhelming response from fans voting for me and I’m very grateful.
You belonged to some groups in the past. Tell us about your relationship with former group members.
I am still good friends with the other members of Necessary Noize and East African Bashment Crew. At the moment, we are all quite busy pushing our solo careers.
Do you have any project you working on?
I’m currently winding up on recording my third studio album. It will drop in the summer mid-year.
We know you have worked with some Nigerian artistes M.I, 2face and others. Any possible collaboration with more Nigerian artistes soon?
I’m definitely working with more Nigerian artistes, but I wanna keep it a secret for now. Don’t wanna ruin the surprise!!
