Nollywood mogul and ROK Studios founder, Mary Remmy Njoku, used the NECLive 2025 platform to announce a new, deeply personal mission: to actively combat the negative narrative dominating the Nigerian media and creative space. Speaking on the panel, Njoku revealed that her successful transition from actress to media entrepreneur was driven by a simple philosophy: solving problems.
“I got rich by solving problems,” she stated, recalling how ROK Studios was built by identifying and filling gaps in the industry, such as talent development. However, she expressed profound sadness over the current media landscape, where “everything online is negative” and creatives feel pressured to generate scandal for visibility.
“If you want to blow right now, you can’t blow by doing good. You have to do something stupid or crazy right now. And it’s not fair on the very few people that are doing good.”
Njoku is now channelling her entrepreneurial drive into a foundation aimed at celebrating unsung heroes. She plans to use her platform and network to honour the “one policeman that does not collect bribe” or the dedicated teacher who “turns up at school even if it rains.” Her goal is to make “being good cool again” and shift the spotlight away from negativity.
Her message is a powerful challenge to the creative community: to use their influence not just for personal gain, but to build a bigger, more positive ecosystem. “What are you doing with your position? You have this position. What are you doing with it beyond paying bills?” she asked, signalling a new chapter in her career focused on social impact.
