Draws for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League have been made today in Nyon, Switzerland, with a number of intriguing ties coming as a result.
Despite finishing top of their Champions League group for the first time in four years, Arsenal were drawn to face German champions Bayern Munich.
It will be the fourth time in the last five seasons that both teams will meet over two legs, with Bayern edging the Gunners out in the last 16 of the competition in 2013 and 2014.
According to Arsenal club secretary David Miles after the draw was made, ‘The fans will think we’ve got the rough end of the draw again. At some stage the tide has got to turn.’
Bayern topped Arsenal in the group stages of last season’s competition, going on to lose in the semis to Atlético Madrid of Spain.
Atlético finished top of their group ahead of Bayern this season and will now play another German side, Bayer Leverkusen.
Elsewhere, reigning champions Real Madrid face a tricky contest against Napoli, the club of former Real striker Gonzalo Higuaín.
Real’s arch-rivals Barcelona also got a tricky last 16 draw, with faltering Paris Saint-Germain their opponents.
It marks yet another meeting between the Spanish and French giants, with Barça coming out tops when both teams met last season.
Other ties see Manchester City facing in form Monaco while surprise package Leicester City were handed a fairly tough draw as they will face Europa League holders Sevilla.
First leg ties for the Round of 16 will be played on February 14-15 and 21-22, 2017, with the second leg matches scheduled for March 7-8 and 14-15, 2017.
