Ghanaian born actor, Mawuli Gavor is one of the biggest new faces in Nollywood. He is also an accountant, model, TV presenter, producer and entrepreneur. He has captured the attention of the entertainment industry with his talent and physique.
After years of modelling while in the US studying to get a degree in Business Management & Finance, he moved back to Ghana. He soon began his professional career as an accountant. However, he landed a brand ambassadorship deal with Martini in 2013 and decided to change career paths. In an interview on Wazobia Max, he spoke about his journey to acting and fame.
“I moved back to Ghana ‘cause I was in the states before. I thought I was going to be doing banking, finance and everything. I was working a regular job as an accountant. I had done some modelling when I was in New York. It was like part-time, as a joke. It wasn’t supposed to be a serious thing but the pictures were out there”, he said. “So I got to Ghana and I think some people saw the pictures. They assumed that I was this model doing like a bunch of stuff. So they hired me for this Martini gig which ended up being like this huge thing, both in Ghana and Nigeria. So I had to keep doing both of it and I couldn’t handle my job and that gig at the same time. So I left my job.”
After leaving his corporate job, Mawuli appeared in a few movies like “A Place Called Happy”, hosted some TV shows and featured in TV series like “Hush” playing ‘Tes’ alongside Richard Mofe-Damijo.
In July 2017, Mawuli announced on Ghana’s 3Music Flava show that plans for his permanent relocation to Nigeria had been finalised. He explained that his schedule, size of the market in Nigeria and a new gig he had just gotten were all contributing factors to his move. He said, “I have been in Nigeria almost a year and a half, it’s been back and forth and it feels like I’ve been there almost 80% of the time. Let me also add that for what I do, it’s better for me there than here.”
Since his move to Nigeria, Mawuli Gavor has continued to grow his portfolio. He has appeared in different series and movies and produced a few of his own. He featured in movies like “Entangled”, award-winning “Payday”, and “Chief Daddy” where he plays ‘Damilare’, Chief Daddy’s first son living abroad. He has also taken major roles in series like “Flat 3B” and Africa Magic’s “Eve”.
In 2018, he played one of his most popular roles as ‘Franklin’ on Ndani TV’s Rumor has it alongside Linda Ejiofor who plays his unfaithful wife. That same year, he received the Best of Nollywood award for ‘Best Kiss’ along with Odera Olivia Orji. Just recently, he appeared in the blockbuster movie, “Sugar Rush” alongside Nollywood stars, Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola, Banky W, Bimbola Ademoye and more.
Mawuli Gavor is clearly just starting up in Nollywood but he has made his love for Nigeria and its film industry well known. There is no doubt that he will continue to develop his craft and appear in blockbuster movies. We can’t wait to see what else Mawuli does on his journey to conquering the world of Nollywood.
