This is the story of how Adekunle Kosoko, aka Adekunle Gold and Simisola Kosoko, aka Simi are winning 2020 together.
When They First Met
Simi and Adekunle Gold’s relationship started on Facebook in 2013. Adekunle had loved her songs as a gospel artist and reached out to her.
‘He was chasing me all over Facebook. When I was doing gospel music, he used to listen to my songs. The first time I ever saw him, I was supposed to do a show at Bogobiri and he came for the show. That was the first time I ever met him,’ she said in an interview on Ndani TV’s The Juice.
The Secret Relationship
When they met each other, Adekunle Gold was trying to break into the industry and Simi was beginning to create a name for herself. Simi told Bolanle on The Juice that, ‘Over the years, we were friends at first. When I first met him, I knew him as king of photoshop. I didn’t know he was doing music seriously.’
As their careers blossomed, their relationship grew too. But they were determined to keep it separate from the music. They kept their love private and refused to talk about their partners in interviews.
When Netng asked Adekunle Gold what was going on with Simi during an interview in 2018, he refused to give a definite answer. Instead, he said, ‘If there’s something to be discovered, just chill. If ever it will come out, then it will.’
However, when they released their first collaboration, ‘Promise’ after their wedding, he revealed that they had been together for five years before their engagement. He said, ‘Earlier in 2018, I asked my girl of 5 years to be my wife. Knowing all my imperfections and shortcomings, she said yes!’
The Wedding
In December 2018, Simi and Adekunle Gold finally confirmed to fans that they were together. Simi shared a photo of the couple kissing on stage with a sweet message. She said, ‘God knew what He was doing when our paths crossed. Your support is immense; ur love is overwhelming in the best way. Thank you, Champ!’
A few days later, Netng reported that ‘the long time lovers got engaged recently and decided to opt for a low-key introduction which was just for their family members and close friends.’
They held their top-secret traditional wedding on January 9, 2019, in Lagos. They had been very secretive about the wedding and reports of the ceremony only came out on the morning of the event.
They rounded up their celebrations with yet another private white wedding ceremony on a beach in Ilashe, Lagos, surrounded by their closest family and friends. They then shared a glimpse of their wedding with fans via a music video for their joint song, ‘Promise’.
Celebrations
While the couple maintains a very private relationship, they sometimes show glimpses of their love to fans through occasional social media posts.
When they celebrated their first anniversary together in January this year, they both took to social media to gush about how perfect the first year had been.
Adekunle Gold said, ‘1 year in and I can’t even begin to say how blessed I am that it’s you I am doing this love something with. You amuse me, you make me laugh, hard, you are so beautiful, I am lucky I get to love you forever. Here’s to more beautiful memories together, doing great exploits and living our lives on our terms. Love you forever babe.’
Simi, on the other hand, wrote an open letter to her husband where she said she had enjoyed the past year and was looking forward to more years. She said, ‘Moruf, thank you for Year One. I love you. I pray year two is even better by God’s infinite mercy and grace and love. I thank God for standing with us and giving us sense. And I thank you for being a man that makes loving you worth it. The love of my life, I will continue to eat your work in the eye of carton. To all the forevers we will spend together!’
Winning 2020
This year has been tough for most people but the Kosokos have had nothing but successes and wins.
Simi currently has her name on two of the biggest records in the country right now. Her feature with LadiPoe, ‘Know You’ and her recent single, ‘Duduke’ have both received critical acclaim.
Adekunle Gold has also released two hits this year. His collaboration with Kiss Daniel on ‘Jore’ was one of the biggest songs in the first quarter of the year. His newest single, ‘Something Different’ is also topping the charts alongside Simi’s ‘Duduke’.
To crown an already beautiful year, they welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl – Adejare Kosoko together on May 30, 2020.
Adekunle announced the birth of his daughter saying, ‘I cried so much when Adejare came out. I cried when I first held her. I can’t lie, I still stare at her and shed a few more.’
