Pop star Seyi Shay is joining Obi Asika and DJ Sose as a judge on the sixth season of Nigerian Idol.
The singer is a perfect fit for the role because she is bringing with her almost three decades of experience in music.
Seyi Shay is not a newbie in the music industry. She ventured into music as a classically trained violinist at six. She started singing professionally at 15 as a member of the prestigious London Community Gospel Choir. At 35, she has performed in many cities around the world with many international acts so she’s well familiar with how grueling performances can be.
A bundle of talent, ‘The Big Girl’ has a powerful voice and is an amazing performer and songwriter. Seyi Shay has penned songs for her peers locally and internationally. She wrote and produced three songs for the soundtrack to Konami’s video game Crime Life: Gang Wars in 2005. She also wrote “You Will See”, for Melanie C’s (from Spice Girls) third studio album Beautiful Intentions in 2005 and “White Lies”, a song from British rapper Chip’s Transition album in 2011.
Contestants will also get to tap into her knowledge of the business side of music. After leaving Flytime Records and before signing to Island Records, Seyi Shay operated as an independent artist circa 2014. In fact, she released one of her biggest hits ‘Murda’ ft Patoranking and Shaydee during the period.
Seyi Shay has seen it all in the music industry. She was even mentored and managed by the legendary Matthew Knowles, who played a big part in making his daughter Beyoncé the global icon she is today. There is no doubt that the contestants on the Nigerian Idol Season Six show will surely benefit a lot from her guidance and experience.
