Funke Akindele, Ini Edo, Genevieve Nnaji, Venita Akpofure and Sharon Ooja are going head-to-head in the Most Popular Actress category at the NET Honours People’s Choice Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious audience data-based awards.
Funke Akindele, who won the coveted award last year, hit a major milestone during the year in review. Her movie, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, which premiered in December 2020, has become the highest-grossing film in Nollywood history, and so far, it has grossed N636 million.
Ini Edo has featured in over 100 movies, including Desperate Billionaire, Girls Cot, Games Men Play, The Weekend Getaway, and Chief Daddy. In October 2020, she appeared in Citation, a drama film directed by Kunle Afolayan.
Genevieve Nnaji is widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s greatest actors of all time. In May 2021, her film, Lionheart, was listed by Oprah Daily as “one of the most captivating foreign films to watch on Netflix.” That same month, the 42-year-old played the role of Sewaa in Fela Ten-Twenty, an audio play adaptation of the Broadway musical FELA!
Venita Akpofure gained prominence in 2019 when she featured as a housemate in Big Brother: Pepper Dem. In December 2020, she starred in Kambili, a romantic comedy film directed by Kayode Kasum, which grossed N20 million at the box office.
Sharon Ooja worked hard during the year in review. She played the lead role in Oloture, a critically-acclaimed crime drama film directed by Mo Abudu, which explored the theme of sex trafficking. She also starred in the romance film Still Falling, which grossed N27.7 million in cinemas.
