Fireboy DML is one of the breakout stars of 2019. He stole the hearts of many with his debut album, but with the release of Apollo, it is clear that Fireboy will fly far and fast in the music industry.
I officially became a Fireboy stan after his debut album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps. The album was a commercial blockbuster and an epic moment for him. However, since Fireboy announced the release of his second album Apollo, I dare say that it has been one of the most anticipated albums of 2020.
Now that the album is out, here’s a curated list of my top five songs off the album.
5. ‘Champ’ ft DSmoke
You know those inspirational adverts you see on TV that give you goosebumps straightaway?, This is the song!
I really loved the choir chant on this song. Although looking at the D Smoke feature, I realised his lyrics didn’t really hit home for me.
I like the fact that Fireboy also delved deeper into the pressures of fame. That’s definitely a topic to be discussed at length
My favourite line has to be “I’m the best my generation has ever seen”. Oh yes, Fireboy!
4. ‘Spell’ ft Wande Coal
When Wande comes on a song, you know that it’s about to be a hit.
This is the second song off the album and I must say it’s the “I no fit die for you but na you I dey live for” line that does it for me.
This song launches Fireboy into the loverboy bag as expected. Yo! When Wande Coal hit the high notes on this song, it sent my heart straight into orbit. I’m definitely going back to listen to this one.
3. ‘Afar’ ft Olamide
When I realised that Fireboy was signed to YBNL, I was already looking forward to a mentor-protege collaboration.
I love the fact that this song is actually relatable and “Make them dey love me from afar” is definitely the line for me. The song is directed to those exes who randomly wake up and send an ‘I miss you’ text. So if any of your exes surface, just send them this song. Das all!
We finally get to hear Olamide rap in full English. I must say ‘Afar’ is the definition of a deep cut. I am actually wowed!
2. ‘Friday Feeling’
Can we have a standing ovation now?
Fireboy and Pheelz are truly a match made in heaven. This song has to be the musical descendant of ‘Party Scatter’. It is definitely making it on my list of post-COVID-19 club anthems. This song is giving me Master KG vibes and I cannot wait to turn up to this song. I love it!
1.‘Tattoo’
This song is one of those ones that came out before the album yet it’s my favourite off the entire album.
“Make I be like tattoo for your body.”
This song is for those people who have tattooed their exes on their bodies. It’s quite the steamy number and I have to hand it to Fireboy. He finished work!
Overall rating
There are seventeen songs on this album and while I have some other favourites, these are definitely my top five tracks.
Fireboy flipped the script and gave us an entirely different sound than we are used to. Also, unlike other new artistes who come into the music scene and struggle to climb the ladder, Fireboy is flying through all the way up and it is so beautiful to see.
But yeah he said it himself: “I be king, I’m the best my generation has ever seen”. He sure is living up to this self-proclaimed title.
I will be rating this album a solid 8 out of 10. I love Fireboy and this album is a work of art.
