Doing a cover of Beyonce’s drunk in love’ would always be a challenge for even the best vocalists; hence, commendation must be given to Niyola for churning out an effort she can be proud of.
Unperturbed by the fact that her career is yet to really kick off since hopping aboard the Banky W-driven EME train, she dug deep and brought forth a trove of hidden treasures, without flaying the keys or mangling the words.
Finally, glimpses of her talent which seemed to fizzle out over the past couple of years could be observed on the five and half minute long ballad.
Hopefully, now that the range and depth of her vocal ability is finally showing, she can now be taken seriously in the same vein as the likes of Omawumi, Tiwa Savage, and Waje.
But it takes more than a cover-song to prove your mettle as a ‘singer worthy of adulation’, she has to build on this and work on original songs that can stand aside and even better that of her peers.
With Niyola, capability has never been an issue; committed effort on the other hand has often been her sole failing. It seems the time is finally here for the EME singer to step out and claim her space.
