Barack Obama, last night, awarded his vice president and long-time friend, Joe Biden, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which came with distinction – an honour which had only been awarded to three other people, including Pope John Paul II.
Obama praised Biden for his faith in America, his love for the country and lifetime of service, as they both prepare to leave office in a few days.
A surprised Biden who could not hold back his tears – probably because he did not expect to be honoured with the medal – had tears streaming down his face as Obama showered him with praises and heartfelt words.
‘To know Joe Biden is to know love without pretense, service without self-regard, and to live life fully,’ the outgoing president passionately said.
Climbing the podium, a still emotional Biden called Obama a remarkable man who did remarkable things for the country.
‘This honour is not only well beyond what I deserve, but it’s a reflection of the generosity of your spirit… I don’t deserve this. But I know it came from the president’s heart.’ Biden said.
