He recently turned 70 years old and has a lot to show for it – the ‘Chief Commander’ Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi over the last seven decades has entertained and inspired Nigerians with his music. A Juju music legend.
NET has a quckie with the Evangelist and he shared their opinion on today’s music, his rivalry with King Sunny Ade, and what we can expect from his forthcoming ‘Oleku’ concert.
I know you’ve probably heard this question a million times, but how does it feel to be 70?
No matter how many times I’m asked this question, I still feel very happy to answer it. I feel blessed, and most of all grateful to God for keeping me till now.
Your much talked about ‘Oleku’ concert comes up on the May 27, which is Children’s Day. What’s the idea behind that date?
Well, if I might put it like this; the 27th will mark children’s day and we promise (KSA and I) to bring out the youthful and vibrant spirit hidden in we the older people (Laughs).
Speaking about you and KSA, almost throughout your careers, you have been considered rivals. What’s your take on this?
Well, I just want to say I respect KSA because he has come a long way in his career. Rivals? There doesn’t seem to be any rivalry between us (points to KSA and laughs). KSA and I are more than friends.
You are one of the few Nigerian artistes from the older generation that signed an international record deal. How did that make you feel at the time?
Of course I felt excited. I kept recording and making more songs. Not everyone had the opportunity so I appreciated it back then and now.
During the 90s, the labels stopped operations and left the country. But in recent times, they seem to have honed in on the new generation of artistes – what’s your opinion on that?
I am quite happy that Nigerian musicians are being appreciated all work very hard. over the world. It’s tough, but Nigerian musicians work very hard.
You have always passed strong messages through your music. Do you feel there is any depth in the music created by the new generation?
They are doing well but there is always space for improvement. I believe in them , they are the future.
Who are your favourite picks from the lot?
I love them all (Laughs)
Finally, what should we be expecting from your May 27 concert with King Sunny Ade?
It will be power packed.
