DJ Cuppy has changed the narrative with her debut album Original Copy. Throughout her career, Cuppy has faced a lot of censure about her music, style and even her hair choices. The heavy criticism she has faced is thanks to the fact that she was born into great privilege, which Nigerian society will always make you apologise for.
After leaving the decks in 2017, She moved to release ‘Greenlight’, a single with Tekno which was a decent attempt. When she released the song ‘Gelato’ with Zlatan, she became more popular for creating club bangers.
Still, DJ Cuppy shocked me all with everything about this project. From the sound, the lyrics, and the amazing collaborations, Original Copy definitely exceeded my expectations. Now let’s delve into my top five favourite songs off the album.
5. ‘Original Copy’
The songs open up with harsh words from a critic saying “DJ Cuppy music is not your forte”. She then flows to brag about what she is about. Criticism is generally regarded as an occupational hazard for artists, and DJ Cuppy has managed to remain unfazed by it. In fact I dare say she has learnt to use it to her advantage.
Although you might think it’s cocky or cheesy coming from a billionaire daughter, I really like the confidence she put into this especially when she said: “I told my daddy I don’t need him no more”. Love it!
4. ‘Litty Lit’ ft. Teni
I predict that this will be one of those songs you’ll hear on the radio non-stop. You can always trust Teni, she never misses a chance to show off her energy and her signature flavour. In my opinion, this song was definitely the highlight of the album and I’ll really like more songs from this duo.
3. ‘Jollof on the Jet’ ft. Rema and Rayvanny
The catchy hook on this song is everything! I love the Rema and Rayvanny mix but Cuppy killed it with her girly tune. Although it was released before the album, it still shines as if it’s new. I definitely love this one. I mean, who can really think of the craziest place to have jollof rice. LOL!
Only DJ Cuppy would eat Jollof on a jet.
2. ‘Karma’ ft Stonebwoy
A party vibe. I have just one word for this song- infectious!
It is one of those songs you should send to your haters, or better still your exes. They’re sure to come back and beg your forgiveness.
The flow in this song is just mind-blowing. I used to be a lowkey Stonebwoy fan, but with this song, I now stan him with my full chest! Honestly, I think I’m in love.
1.‘Feel Good’ ft Fire Boy
If you know me, you know I am a Fireboy stan for life, so it’s no surprise that this song is my favourite. Yeah, sue me or whatever.
This song has that vibe of everything. It has the children’s party vibe, the clubbing and date night vibe and just packs them all into a winning song that just works.
Overall Rating
Original Copy shows us that DJ Cuppy’s artistic range is a lot richer and wider than we knew. All through the album, you’ll see her exploring niche sounds without being too repetitive.
DJ Cuppy went contrary to the expectations of what the project would hold and shocked us with an album that passes the test. Although there were a number of collaborations on Original Copy, there were some shining moments where we could actually see her delivering.
I’ll wrap up my review of this album in one word – growth. Overall, I will rate this album a solid 7 out of ten. It is clear that Cuppy’s six-year-long journey to her debut album has finally paid off. Way to go, Cuppy!
