It is humanely impossible for Damini ‘Burna Boy’ Ogulu to make a bad record at the moment as he has shown no signs of slowing down by adding double Grammy nominations to his glittering shelf to make a total of six nominations.
The Recording Academy announced the 2023 Grammy nominations in a live-streamed event on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, and Nigerian singer and one-time Grammy winner, Burna Boy, made headlines with two nominations in the Best Global Music Album category for Love, Damini and Best Global Music Performance for ‘Last Last’ to make him the joint most-nominated Nigerian artiste in Grammy history with 6 nominations, on par with legend Femi Kuti.
Burna’s career found deep-seated reverence with his critically acclaimed albums African Giant and Twice as Tall. In 2022, the megastar continued his remarkable run with the album Love, Damini which, although according to critics may not stand at the heights of its predecessors, towers above its peers.
This is coming on the heels of his award for Best Africa Act at the 2022 MTV European Music Awards and his feature on the soundtrack of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He also won the Best Male Artist & Best African Act at the 2022 Headies Awards earlier in the year.
Before the 2023 Grammy nominees were announced, fans already had their eyes peeled to see the Nigerian representing the country on the global stage among the triumvirate of Wizkid and Davido. With the global sensation Love, Damini, Burna Boy received the nomination for Best Global Music Album and, no surprise, ‘Last Last’, a track off the album, affirms Burna’s legendary status with a nomination in the Best Global Music Performance category.
Meanwhile, seasoned performer Angélique Kidjo joins Burna Boy in the Best Global Music Album category for a consecutive year with the album Queen of Sheba. Songstress Tems also received nominations in the Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song category through her feature on Future’s ‘Wait For U’.
Burna Boy appears to be marking the end of 2022 with a cherry on top of the cake as he’s been touring the globe with his Love, Damini and serving hits all year to the delight of fans and the Nigerian music industry at large.
Outsiders, as his fans have christened themselves, must be more than thrilled. Even more so if he eventually brings home the awards.
