Burna Boy delivers again on Twice As Tall, and while it’ll always be hard to top his album African Giant, his latest album absolutely satisfies this young Nigerian fan.
It is amazing to see Burna Boy address societal issues, encourage young people, and walk us through his journey of success all in one album. This is Classic Burna!
I’ve been a solid Burna Boy fan since the days of ‘Outside’, and I probably will be a fan way into my dying days. But first, let me tell you about my top five songs from the Twice As Tall album.
5. ‘Level Up’
This song starts off the album, and although it starts soberly, the message behind the lyrics got me thinking.
Burna tells the world that he’s more than just a pop artiste. He lets us know that this is just the beginning of his greatness. For a song that started so seriously this one did a number in my head. Yo!
4. ‘Wonderful’
This single was released before the album, but I am a bit biased on this one. Sue me. Hehehe.
This is one of those songs that makes you feel like King Kong when you listen to it. In fact, you can literally feel your confidence rise and your shoulder pads increase as you vibe to it.
According to Burna Boy, ‘Wonderful’ transcends country borders, cultural barriers and races. I love this one.
Fave line: “I no want make person tell me say I too lazy…”
3. ‘23’
Burna Boy has officially made the number ‘23’ popular. My take on this one is simple – this song is too passionate, too sensual, and too beautiful to ignore. His harmony on this song is absolutely captivating. It will be very hard for anyone not to love ‘23’.
In fact, it should be a punishable offense to not love this cut.
2. ‘Bebo’
First of all, the instrumentals on the song hit hard. Secondly, I just know that the title of this song will be one of the new social media buzz words of the year!
Burna boy describes the slang ‘Bebo’ as the guy who orders the entire bar when you invite him out for a drink. I think we can all relate with Burna on that experience. Anyone who can’t afford their drinks or dates should be called ‘Bebo’.
Fave line: “Dem go dey kpa mukutun, Bebo…”
1. ‘Monsters You Made’
This song is fire! With everything that has happened in 2020, this song is a wake-up call to everyone and it reminds me of the movie The Hate You Give.
It also features Chris Martin of the multiple award-winning band, Coldplay. To be honest, I wouldn’t have imagined a Chris Martin and Burna Boy collaboration before this, but this duo absolutely killed it!
The song fluidly talks about how the environment can kill the dreams of the youths and addresses the root cause of injustice. I stan Burna Boy over and again for this masterpiece.
Fave line: “You know we come from a place where people smile but it’s fake. How could they smile? If you look around they are surrounded by pain…”
Overall Rating
I really love Twice As Tall. This is by far my favourite album from Burna Boy and you can tell that he put a lot of work into this project.
The fact that he expands his sounds heavily and isn’t afraid to test new styles of singing should be commended. I’ve always loved Burna Boy’s songs because they’re such a confidence booster. I feel like I have everything I need to take me through the rest of this rather hard year. And I feel like I can write another history exam already. Ha!
In my opinion, Twice As Tall is absolutely Grammy worthy. Overall I will give this album 4.5 ⭐ over 5. What would you rate it?
