If Davido’s arch rival, Wizkid had told him before the Channel O Music Video Awards that he would come back empty handed from his trip to South Africa, Davido would have probably laughed it off as another bite of beef from an unhappy fellow.
The sad reality, however, hit the HKN boss hard on the night of Saturday, November 29, 2014 when he experienced probably the longest night in his turly glittering career as he watched others smile home with the coveted plaques one after the other while he lost out in all the 5 categories in which he was nominated.
Make no mistake, HKN boss Davido has done remarkably well for himself in 2014. He began the year on a winning note by clinching the BET, NEA and MTV Awards as the Best African Act. He also won at the City People Entertainment awards and in all he’s won about 23 awards this year alone but his fortunes began to dwindle in the last 3 weeks with a losing streak setting in.
First, he lost out at the MOBO Awards to Fuse ODG of Ghana, then he also lost out to Sauti Sol of Kenya at the 2014 MTV EMAs, the Soul Train Awards as well as the 2014 Nigeria Music Video Awards. The crowning disappointment, however, is not winning any of the 5 nominations at the just-concluded 2014 edition of Channel O Music Video Awards.
With this in mind, entertainment pundits look ahead at the last major awards ceremony of the year and weigh his chances. The 9th edition of the Headies will hold on December 14, 2014 in Lagos at the Eko Hotels and Suites and once again, Davido has been nominated in 3 categories – Best Pop Single, Artiste of the Year and Song of the Year and the spotlight is on him.
Recall that at the 2013 edition of Headies, Davido smiled home with two awards – Hip Hop World Revelation of the Year and Best R&B/Pop album categories and this year, the HKN boss would be looking to end the year on a high note.
The big question now is: Will it be a good night for Davido come December 14, 2014 or will it be another unpleasant event in his career?
