MTN Y’ello Star came to an end on Sunday, December 13, 2020, with Dotti getting the first-ever ‘Y’ello Star’ crown. He received 64% of the votes and was without a doubt the biggest winner of the night.
He wowed the judges and fans alike from the first performance he had on the show. He improved with each gala and stole more hearts. He even trended three times on Twitter after having amazing performances on the show. It was very clear that he was going to win.
Dotti won N5 million, a fully furnished apartment with an in-house studio, a brand new car, a one-year recording deal, and a chance to record a song written by six-time Grammy winner, Malik Yusef at the Berklee Power Station in New York.
Storm, who got 15% of votes and came first runner-up got a N3 million cash prize and the second runner-up, Gideon, with 9% of the total votes, gets a N1.5 million cash prize.
The top six, Dotti, Storm, Gideon, Fay Fay Diamond, Caesar, and Freeborn got scholarships to Berklee College of Music’s 2021 Summer Music Program. MTN will also fly them to New York where they will attend classes.
The 14 finalists got consolation prizes and program certifications from Berklee College of Music and Henley Business School worth thousands of dollars, as well as an induction into the Henley Business school alumni.
Y’ello Star judge and six-time Grammy winner, Malik Yusef has also promised to work with as many of the contestants as he can. He told Netng in a short interview that, ‘not only is there a chance that I will work with someone that didn’t win, it’s a 100% certainty. These people have been given a platform to propel their careers, so I’m going to see them out in these Lagos and internet streets’.
This way, MTN Nigeria has made sure that every contestant is a winner and that they are not only churning out ‘former’ reality stars but well-rounded musicians. Hopefully, just like Omawumi, Timi Dakolo, Chike, Niniola, Chidinma, and Iyanya, who excelled after being talent show contestants, these 14 finalists will go on to have long and successful careers.
