I think you can agree with me if I say the last three years have been the biggest for Nigerian music – from the local angle and international front. Big budget spending, top quality videos, proper PR strategizing, big-budget endorsements and not forgetting quality music, yes you would definitely agree…
Little wonder last year when Black Entertainment Television announced that they would feature a new ‘Best International Act’ category in the BET Awards 2010, Nigerian acts M.I and P Square made the final list which also included Kojo Antwi, Chipmunk, Dizzee Rascal, Estelle, Hip Hop Pantsula, K’NAAN, Corinne Bailey Rae and Sade.
Although M.I or P Square didn’t grab the award which looked impossible placing them against some of the hottest acts at that time, it did shed a lot of light on urbane Nigerian music. For instance they were given a special feature interview which was conducted by BET show host Wendy Williams.
So moving on to this year’s BET awards, the organizers have gone a step further to appreciate non-US based acts by breaking down the international category into ‘Best International Act: UK’ and ‘Best International Act: Africa’.
NET Critical Breakdown
There are five artistes nominated in the ‘Best International Act: Africa’ category; 2face Idibia and D’banj from Nigeria, Fally Ipupa from Congo DR, Angelique Kidjo from Benin Republic and Teargas from South Africa. Firstly, if any of these acts win, I think they deserve it.
Teargas, the South African hip-hop trio have made quite an impression with 3 albums. Their very likable style which is rapping in Swahili and English has gained a following; in 2010 they won the award for ‘Best Cinematography’ at the Sound City Music Awards (SMVA) for their ‘Goodfellaz’ video. Well deserved if you ask me.
If you are wondering why the contemporary Grammy Award winning Beninoise singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo has been nominated here is one solid reason: The 50-year-old icon released her ninth album Õÿö in April last year and it was nominated for Best Contemporary World Music Album for the 53rd Grammy Awards. The album which featured covers of songs by Aretha Franklin and cameos from John Legend and Bono made a big impression in the international market.
Fally Ipupa – who wouldn’t agree that last year was the biggest so far for the much-loved Congolese artiste? The Congo-born, francophone makosa singer hit the limelight with his famous dance steps and hit songs that shook the continent. At the MTV MAMAs in 2010, he won 2 awards – ‘Best Francophone Act’ and ‘Best Video’.
The past year was also big for 2face Idibia. Two MTV MAMA awards for ‘Best Male Act’ and ‘Artiste of The Year’, 2face has successfully climbed the ladder of relevance and importance as he can be referred to as Nigeria’s biggest musical export. His fourth album ‘The Unstoppable International Edition‘ revamped a sinking career and was the perfect turn around for him. In 2011, he featured on BET‘s ‘Welcome To America’ where he talked about his early days as a singer and plans for the future.
D’banj has been having it real good in the last one year. With the anticipation of a fourth solo album ‘Mr. Endowed‘ to hit stores this year, he started out with a couple of singles that rocked the airwaves and got the approval of fans from far and wide. And who can forget that he pulled major weight by featuring renowned US rapper Snoop Dogg on the remix of ‘Mr. Endowed’ and shot a big budget video for it in California and featured on BET‘s ‘Welcome to America’ show…? As if that wasn’t enough, the entertainer slapped a ‘G.O.O.D Music signing right in our faces as he is now an official artiste on Kanye West’s record label. Indeed it has been a huge year for ‘Dapo Oyebanjo.
So looking at this analysis and trying to compare and contrast, I’ll place my bet (no pun intended) on D’banj! Not trying to downplay the rest but not a creative Teargas, a comeback album by Kidjo, a Sexy dancing Fally Ipupa or even the very talented 2face can knock D’banj off right now. An international deal with one of the hottest record labels in the world (G.O.O.D distributes through Def Jam Records) is just the right recipe and winning the awards would just buttress the point.
Don’t agree? Let me know what you think!

I tink 2face will win d BET award cos of d 2 MTV awards nd a current album rocking d airwaves. D’banj is yet 2 release his album nd one cant tell how hot its gonna be.
Surely, 2face is d right act 4 d award. I hope he’ll win.
My bet is on 2face. Checking through your analysis all these guys have been good over the year. But checking quality and consistency, I give it to Tuface Idibia. I really wish I could do a thorough break down, but this space would not work.
very fundamental error.
Teargas do not rap in Swahili. They rap in Zulu.Swahili is not spoken in South Africa at all.I wonder why this impression persists.
I think 2face shd win!he has done more music(album,shows,collaborations eg ONE8 and many locals)and won more awards(MTV and so many local),media buzz(monique,bet tv &magazine,billboard) than any1!hez d man 2 beat!
2face is d best option for that award, he has done much more, he is well recognized and respected, receives uncountable awards both locally and internationally. He is just d best and according to his album, he is UNSTOPPABLE whether they like it or not .
Itz 2face or k0dj0…#shikena#
Itz 2face or kidj0…#shikena#
Personally, i think 2 Face has a chance but it’s clear that D’banj will win it. With his current signing to G.O.O.D Music owned by one of the greatest rappers, it will really boost his chances of grabbing the award.
I believe in my 2baba, He has real great in Nigeria industry and world wide. Success to 2face
2face all d way 2 grammy. Thks 2 don jazzy if nt 4 is nice beatz non of d artiste on mo’hit wud be signed 2 gud musik. Talkin abt talent nt luck.

it seems that u are a fan of dbanj, If not, what is d citeria u use to come up with ur verdit, let me just take down to some facts on 2face, 2MTV awards, ambassador to one the biggest telecommunication group in the world, and to the NAFDAC, touch of genius award for honouring nigerian icon, one8 project with the best R&B singer R kelly and other biggest african artists, collabration with multi grammy award winning Mary J bidge, most sougth after artist when it comes to collabration in africa, and most sought after for shows and endorsement, common u should apluad nigeria second biggest export after crude oil because He (2face) is unstoppable….
am totally convinced that even if any club came in with the offer, he would reject the proposition,” he told RTP.
“Villas-Boas is very committed to Porto and more so after this big season. Two days ago he also told me that if no players leave, then he will not even need any new players.”
The club have already tied down striker Hulk to a new long-term deal, which also saw his release clause rise to €100 million, while negotiations are ongoing with leading scorer Radamel Falcao – whose current deal has a release clause of €30 million.
“This is being looked at,” he said in reference to Falcao. “He has already showed a willingness to renew, but he has a two-year contract so I am not worried.”
2baba bring it home. 2baba is d winner, nobdy can beat dat, it is clear.
Dbanj all d way. He realy deserved it. He’s also hardworkin. He’s d only act in naija dat’z neva gone solo since inception in 2003.
To be honest 2baba is de best, but i think dbanj also can win de award bcos if u watch mr en’dow scape gaot and oliver twis and so on, u can see dat he deserve it and also rmber dat jose morinho is best caoch in all de clube but he was defeated in his home stadium against pep gardiola, so i think dbanj can defeat 2baba.
i think D’banj can win the award because is capable of wining it
