Welsh actor Matthew Rhys made Emmy history at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, taking home two major acting honours as Widow’s Bay emerged as the night’s biggest winner.
The American comedy series Widow’s Bay led the awards with an impressive 14 wins, while DTF St. Louis followed with seven.
Hosted by actress Mariska Hargitay, the ceremony was held Monday night at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, California.
Rhys’ double victory came in the lead actor categories for his performances in Widow’s Bay and The Beast in Me, marking a historic achievement for the Welsh star.
Meanwhile, veteran actress Jean Smart continued her remarkable Emmy run, winning her eighth career Emmy and fifth consecutive award for her role in Hacks. The latest victory ties her for the record for the most acting Emmys.
Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri, who was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy for her performance in The Bear, missed out on the award, which went to Smart.
Another Nigerian-American nominee, Joy Sunday, also fell short in the Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category for her role in DTF St. Louis. The award went to her HBO Max co-star Linda Cardellini.
