Music is amazing. For everything you’re thinking / feeling, someone’s been there obviously. How do you know? Because there’s a song for it. One issue which has a million songs for it is the friend zone issue. For those who don’t know, ‘friend zone’ is a term used to describe the situation where one party likes or loves the other party but that person only sees them as a friend. So here are, according to me, ten of the best ‘Friend Zone Anthems’. Songs that deal with friend zoning from different perspectives. Feel free to tweet at me and let me know which other ones you know or love @tosynbucknor
10. Usher ‘You Remind Me’
Usher Raymond knows a thing or two about friend zoning someone. But on this song, what makes it worse is, he friend zones this chick, not for anything she’s done to him directly, but because ‘you remind me of a girl I used to know’. Chei
9. Mosa ‘I love you (#IllJustSayIt)’
I stumbled upon this song and love it! This is when you’re so frustrated by the friend zone situation you’re in that you blurt it out. Of course, noone knows what happens next in Mosa’s song, but I do hope it ended well. Yikes
8. Aramide ‘Killing Me’ and Avril Lavigne’s ‘Things I’ll Never Say’
Unlike Mosa, Aramide and Avril have chosen to keep their feelings hidden. I think Aramide’s ‘Killing Me’ should be made a single complete with video. A lot of people would sing along (possibly in tears) to the chorus ‘it’s killing me inside/i don’t know what to do/i guess I’ll keep it to myself until I die’
Avril Lavigne manages in her pop rock manner to tell the story of how no matter how it kills you, and no matter what it costs, there are things you will never say.
7. Neyo ‘Let me love you (until you learn to love yourself)’
How pathetic can one get in love? I mean, now you’re going to just stay there and mope and practically stalk this person? Yikes.
6. Mario ‘Let me love you’
#FunFact Ne-Yo actually wrote this song!!! Anyways, Mario sings and dances his way through a very familiar situation for a lot of us- watching someone we love love someone who doesn’t love them.
5. P Square ‘More than a Friend’
Aww. The Okoye brothers have now found love, but there was a time they were pining for a friend so bad, that they went into the studio to plead ‘can you be more than a friend/to the end’
4. Bob Marley ‘Wait in Vain’
Even the greatest went through it! And Bob Marley and the Wailers wailed nicely through their pain and… Determination. ‘And I still can wait some more…’ Wow
3. En Vogue ‘Don’t let go’
Some people think this is a song for booty calls. Perhaps. Used in the movie ‘set it off‘ it provides a nice mood for Jada Pinkett-Smith to get it on! But listen to the lyrics and you’ll see this is a friend zone anthem of life. ‘What’s it gonna be/Cos I can’t pretend/Dont you wanna be/More than friends’
2. Banky W ‘Yes No’
If there ever was a friend zone anthem-worthy song, this is it! Banky W is in love with a girl who is using him to catch cruise. And he’s still so torn up about it that he actually still goes back to high school and does the, ‘would you be my lover/yes/no’ thing.
But Banky, you know what they say- if you have to ask…
1. Mario ‘Just a Friend’
Mario has the (un)lucky pleasure of getting not one but two songs unto this countdown! ‘O baby you/got what I need/but you say I’m just a friend/you say I’m just a friend/i can be your/fantasy/but you say I’m just a friend’ Congrats Mario!
