The music industry has seen a lot of growth over the years. The term Disc Jockey that was previously termed a men’s thing, has taken a shift as more females are diving into it. These disc jockeys are definitely working effortlessly to bring entertainment, vibes and energy both Nigeria and globally, who knows you might find them at your next turn up session.
DJ Cuppy
Florence Otedola, popularly called Dj Cuppy, who wasn’t first accepted by many, has proved to everyone that she is here to stay. In 2015, Cuppy was named the official DJ for the 2015 Oil Barons Charity in Dubai, and became the first African act to perform at the event. She also appeared in Pepsi’s”#NaijaAllTheWay” all star commercial ahead of the 2018 World Cup. The Miss Gelato has warmed her way into the hearts of her fans known as cupcakes, home and abroad.
DJ Switch
Obianuju Udeh, shot into limelight after her group, Da pulse won the 2009 edition of the Star quest, a reality music competition. They went on to release a hit song titled ‘So Tey’, and featured american rapper Busta Rhymes. Switch is a songwriter and singer who gained more attention when she won the first edition of The Glo X factor in 2013. Since then she has stamped her brand in the mind of people.
DJ Lambo
Olawunmi Okerayi, inherited her skills from her father DJ Tony Lewis. However she upped her game to become sought after in the entertainment industry with her signature dreads. She has also shown on the Big Brother Naija saturday parties with her awesome performances. In 2017, she was named the head and president of Choc Boi Nation (CBN), with this announcement she became one of the major female record label executives in the music industry in Nigeria.
DJ Honeeay
Oyin Ilupeju professionally known as DJ Honeeay, CEO of Bakwaibags and business economist, is definitely one we cannot afford to miss on our Radar. Performing at some of your favorite Lagos chill spots and events. She works hard to create a fusion of music from all parts of Africa, seen in one of her popular playlists on apple music called ‘ilé’ which features SA house music.
DJ Nana
Nanayat Abedoh, but known to everyone as DJ Nana broke into the limelight in 2011 when she won the first ever Airtel/Bacardi Cool FM DJ Competition. Few years after she went on to release “Know”, her first official single. The song features Omawumi. In 2018, Nana together with DJ Bonny and DJ Switch were featured on one of the editions of the CNN Programme, Inside Africa which celebrated a new generation of African women disc jockeys.
These women have undoubtedly made a name for themselves and are changing the face of the music industry. We anticipate more women by the end of the decade but for now these ladies deserve all the accolades.
