Last year was a difficult one for many people. The world experienced the first wave of COVID-19. There was a global lockdown, inflation, loss of jobs, protests, and a general sombre feeling. But these comediennes gave people reasons to laugh through their skits and comedic videos.
That is why we’ll be looking out to see what other amusing content they’ll be putting out this year, and you should watch out too.
1. Adedamola Adewale
Adeherself became popular after releasing a video where she was speaking Queen’s English before suddenly switching to ‘street-style Yoruba’ in December 2019. She continued releasing videos like that and also started featuring her parents and siblings in her skits. Her Instagram account has since grown from less than 50,000 followers to over 361,000 followers.
After the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested her last year for alleged fraud, she came back hotter and funnier. She has since started a ‘partnership’ with another online comedian, ‘Cute Abiola’. Many fans are waiting to see how far their ‘love’ project will go. And it’s just one more reason to keep watching out for Adeherself.
2. Adeyela Adebayo
Lizzy Jay, also known as Omo Ibadan, uploaded her first comedy skit ‘how girls from different states sleep’ in May 2017. She launched the ‘Omo Ibadan Cosin Senta Concept’ (Omo Ibadan Coaching Center Concept) afterwards. The series centres around a dumb teacher teaching ignorant students. She creates hilarious pronunciations from regular words and cracks her 1.6 million followers up with the help of her students.
Lizzy also made a move from strictly Instagram comedy to stand-up, and she is now also dabbling in movies. In 2020, she took on a major role in Rok Studios’ ‘P.A From Hell’ alongside Uzor Arukwe. She also announced that she was producing her first movie and we can’t wait to see what else she comes up with this year.
3. Anita Asuoha
The Real Warri Pikin transcends all comedic barriers. She does stand up comedy, skits, and even movies. To top it all, she’s also an OAP. She’s literally in your ears everywhere you turn to. Thankfully, she is hilarious, and there’s never a dull moment with the mother of three. She initially came into the limelight as a dancer and TV host but transitioned into full-time comedy in 2018. She’s slowly made a name for herself since then and is now a fan-favourite. She already started the year on a good note as she released her debut comedic single, ‘School of Thought’ featuring Teni The Entertainer.
4. Apaokagi Maryam
Taooma is Mama Tao, Papa Tao/Kunle, Tao and Young Money-T. She pulls off being four characters all at once with great editing, but each character is a case study in hilarity. Tao started putting out her skits because she was trying to learn how to edit videos. She released her breakout video, ‘When your mum takes you to school’ in 2019. People found the skit so hilarious they began to follow her. Today, she has over 1.7 million followers on Instagram. She has become one of the influential comediennes of her time, and we can’t wait to see either Tao or Young Money-T get more famous slaps from Mama Tao.
5. Chinaza Ezeani
Miss Ezeani started posting videos online while her school was on strike, but she never expected them to go viral. One of her skits, ‘Grace to Grass Nollywood stories’ went viral in December 2018. Since then she has created several new videos, each one funnier than the next. It is one of the reasons she now has over 103,000 followers on Instagram.
She is one of the most diversified skit makers turned comediennes you’ll find right now; putting her hands into a little bit of every niche you’ll find. She will do the typical ‘7 types of people you’ll find’ skit, then do a ‘Nollywood Parody’ skit. The next day she’ll show you what ‘African mothers do/ what it feels like to live in an African home’. One thing remains constant in every style of skit she chooses to make – she’s hilarious.
6. Hafeezah Salau
Feezah Fizzle went viral in October 2019 after she put out a video complaining that it is frustrating to be a Nigerian law student. She creates comical content with her regular ‘Feezah rants’, ‘Feezah Talks’, and many other skits. The comedienne is already showing that she’s ready to have an amazing content-filled 2021. With only less than a month into the new year, she has already put out a ton of funny videos, and we are itching for more.
7. Jessica Anagor
Jessiekaey started creating her skits in February 2019 after her Campus pastor advised her to use them to hone her acting skills. She created several characters including Mama Azuka, Azuka, and Sister Benefit, and has now made each character very popular. Her unique church-like acting, terrible dressing and verbose language have made her stand out from other comediennes. She already started 2021 proving she’s ready to make her 106,000 followers laugh away their sorrows with her twist to the ‘Bussit Challenge’.
8. Kemi Ikuseedun
If you’ve ever heard about ‘Mummy Wa’ especially on Mr Macaroni’s skits, then you probably already know and love Kemz Mama. But, she’s more than just Mr Macaroni’s sidekick. She creates her content where she takes on a persona completely different from her other collaborations. Kemi will create more independent skits this year. She will also collaborate with other acts, and we can’t wait to see what magic she puts forward.
9. Ogechi Ukonu (Caramel Plugg)
Caramel Plugg is the real owner of the cruise ship. The very definition of happiness is contagious. She releases content that is different from other comediennes. She created her signature look with huge bonnets, a special dance move, and money-spraying. Asides from her dance, vibes and cruise, she also says the hard truths in the funniest ways. Her commentaries are hilarious and piercing, and we quite frankly want more. We can’t wait to see more bonnet-wearing, camera-staring, head-grabbing and hilarious truth-speaking skits this year.
10. Oluwatoyin Albert
‘Dat Warri Girl’ is surprisingly a Yoruba woman from Ondo State. Growing up in Delta helped her learn the customs and language (Wafi) that are key parts of her comedic act.
Speaking in the funny Warri accent, she talks about real societal issues in the most comical manner. Since her first video in February 2017, she has not stopped using comedy to address serious issues. She is a breath of fresh air, and her authenticity has landed her actual stand-up gigs and movie roles. She plays the role of ‘Tejiri’ on ‘My Flatmate’, and her new show with UshBebe, ‘Abnormal’ recently premiered on Pop Central. After an amazing 2020, Dat Warri Girl is on to a great year, and we can’t wait to see what more she does!
11. Perpetua Chris
Perpetua started making relatable and amusing skits in 2017. She usually creates videos where she acts out the roles of different people’s reactions in the same scenarios. She also creates content about other topics like African mothers, African homes, and sibling relationships. She sometimes touches on key societal issues but with a lot of humour while also driving home her point. After delivering interesting content throughout 2020, we can’t wait to see what she pulls off this year.
12. Stephanie Isuma
When you hear her signature ‘Morning sunshine, okay’ in that incredibly hilarious deep Calabar accent, you immediately know that it’s time to laugh. You focus on watching the Calabar chic share her two cents on real issues, knowing that you’ll learn from it and also get a good chuckle.
She has now gone beyond the online comedy she was initially known for. She is an all-round comedienne, doing comedy on shows like ‘Shakara and The Gang’ and ‘The AY show’. She has also appeared in a few movies. In 2020, she featured on ‘Alakada Reloaded’ and Africa Magic’s ‘Riona’. After bringing in the big bucks last year, we only expect more hilarity from her in 2021.
