Suppose you need a Nigerian star to act the role of Jefferson Pierce in the American drama series Black Lightning; there is no need to bust a gut because Titi Kuti is your go-to person.
Standing over 6ft tall, with a mane of sparkly dark hair and an impeccable skill set, Titi Kuti’s imposing stature is well complemented by his baby face, all ensuring that he could stand in as the menacing Robert McCall in The Equalizer or the sweet and enigmatic Michael Block in The Photograph.
Born on July 30, 1980, Titi Kuti grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, harnessing the touché and grit of his Lagos Island and Surulere backgrounds and putting them to creative use. While others searched for purpose within the curl of his Alma mater, Lagos State University, and despite his bid for a B. Sc in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Titi stayed undeterred, busy ripping his jeans, flying his collars, and donning eclectic tops which would eventually catch the attention of the industry’s great and good.
His reward for daring to be different came in 2005 with a modelling debut for MTN and Conoil as a billboard model. Subsequently, as a runway model, he became involved in modelling for a series of trendy brands such as The St Moritz style awards and Benson & Hedges. Attributing his quick rise through the ranks to steadfastness and an open mind, he went from learning production and media to working as a presenter, producer and resource person in the channel communications department of Nigezie.
By 2009, he had become the host of The Top Ten Countdown Show on Nigezie Xtreme (formally Nigezie TV), a music countdown show which he later served as the producer of The Top Ten Countdown Show. That marked the beginning of a series of roles as host or producer on different shows through the years.
With a bang-up job in the role of Ade Tiger in King of Boys in 2021, Titi Kuti became a household name. His perfect embodiment of the role did not only take his name to epic proportions but charted a colossal trajectory for him in Nollywood and the Nigerian entertainment industry.
On how he prepared to capture his role perfectly, he told The Guardian:
‘It is definitely hard work, dedication, grace and selfless thinking. I never thought of myself alone when I was filming King of Boys. I thought of the industry as a whole and positioning globally post-filming.’
‘I took time to absorb the character, created a mental picture of the image and personalised the lines with the description from the character ‘bible’ and built on it. I spent four weeks absorbing, developing and amplifying the character’, he said.
Little wonder that Titi Kuti won the Net Honours Breakout Actor of the Year (2022), pulling 36.5% of the votes in the category.
Titi Kuti’s unique acting skills and striking looks ensure that he has all it takes to quickly move from a breakout star to a fast-rising one. From a modest model and compère, Ade Tiger is the real ‘King of Boys’.
