The Toronto International Film Festival holds every September in Toronto, Canada and eight Nollywood films will be screened at this year’s edition starting September 8.
Since its inception in 1976, films with strong messages and content have featured at the event, including 12 Years A Slave, Dallas Buyers Club, The Dressmaker, The Danish Girl, Room and more.
However, Nigerian films have barely made an appearance in Toronto; with Half of a Yellow Sun the exception in 2013.
Hence, the fact that eight Nigerian films will feature at this year’s edition implies the industry is making progress and ultimately, more could be shown in future.
It all boils down to the structure, and an improvement in material will be really appreciated by the world of film.
As the third largest film industry in the world, the result of such improvement in directing, writing and overall production will pave way for slots at other film festivals like Sundace Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival and more.
For now, these are the films from Nigeria that will feature at the festival.
