In the Beginning…
They sounded like nothing Nigeria had ever heard before! With polished lyrics that masterfully married English language with our native tongues, finely textured voices seamlessly layered over sparkling instrumentals and powerful emotions that resonated through their sultry music, Tunde, Shifi & Zeal were a breath of air much fresher than a cold peppermint. If Olufunmi was a drug, then STYL Plus were the dealers and Nigerians were the helpless fiends; we were all hooked! And just when we were weaning off that medicine, they made us relapse with Runaway and then Call My Name and we suddenly found ourselves requiring Rehab to stay away from the rest of their intensely addictive music.
When the going was good…
Oh, it was very good! The trio immediately satisfied their growing followership by releasing an EP in 2003. It contained their hit ballads Olufunmi and Runaway amongst other singles and the crew followed the success of that release with their full length debut Expression (February 2006). Their hit streak continued with Imagine That, Iya Basira, Drives Me Crazy and Hadiza. The boys could do no wrong! Back then, a major concert was incomplete if STYL Plus was not on the bill. They shared stages with superstars like Boyz II Men, Wyclef Jean and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
Okay so in the looks department, they weren’t exactly Africa’s answer to Brad Pitt, and their music videos looked like they were directed by Stevie Wonder. But Nigerians fell in love with STYL Plus’ music first and foremost- everything else was secondary. Their fan base extended well beyond these borders, they had hoards of loyal fans in Ghana, South Africa, Liberia, Gambia, Sierra Leone and the group were the darling of Nigerians in the Diaspora. The African kingmakers soon took notice; the group took home a Kora Award and in 2005; they also won the coveted Channel O award.
And then it’s all gone…
More of gradual decline than a sudden degradation; as 2007 came along, STYL Plus was visibly struggling to maintain her momentum. First, chinks in their armour began to appear when reports in the media suggested that the gross earnings from Expressions audio and video compilation CDs didn’t quite match the expectations of Astro Media Limited, the media marketing company that supported the project. Then over a period of roughly 18 months, nationwide tours and shows overseas gradually reduced in frequency and the African giants shrunk to become mere Abuja legends, slowly transitioning from headlining major nationwide concerts, to performing as add-ons at low profile gigs and then to basically nothing at all. In a bid to stem the malaise, the group released a follow up to their debut album titled Back and Better (May 2008) but by that time, people were already switching off. Promoters were switching off, marketers were switching off, show sponsors were switching off, mass media were switching off and saddest of all, the fans were switching off. The album had minimal publicity and amassed the group’s worst sales total yet. The album was also panned by critics and rather than heralding the return of the kings of African R&B, it only further distanced them away from their own throne.
But where did they go wrong?
Unconfirmed internal dissatisfaction within the (seemingly) tightly-knit clan; change of priorities by the group members; reduction in the quality of music output, following music trends as opposed to the time when they were setting them; an inept artiste management team that struggled to cope with the challenges of the group’s sudden rise; inability of the crew to parlay their popularity into a formidable brand; their preference for residing in (Federal capital Territory) Abuja rather than the entertainment hub of Africa; Lagos, inability to build allegiances and establish strong friendships within the industry and ultimately poor vision. The trio seemed to be suffering, but somehow suffering in silence. It’s hard to believe that just three years ago, 2face Idibia, P Square and STYL Plus belonged to the same league . It is really hard to believe.
The problem with Unbreakable
Like that thief that creeps up on an unsuspecting victim in the middle of the night, Shifi and the boys suddenly ganged up on us and out of nowhere, a new album is out! While we don’t live in their pockets and can’t tell you if this bold move made any financial sense, it’s safe to say this new album landed with more of whimper than a loud thud. However, this sad situation had nothing to do with the album’s quality, but more to do with anticipation, or lack thereof. Nigerians don’t respond very well to surprises – unfortunately for STYL Plus, sometimes even the pleasant ones.
Conclusion
By design, the worldwide boy band model was never built to outlast a few peaks and disintegrate at the shallowest valley. For simply staying together for this long and managing to remain relevant in the process, STYL Plus deserve our utmost respect. But is it our fault that we’ve become so enamoured by their music that Nigerians don’t want to see STYL Plus merely survive?! We all want to see them thrive! Besides, when the gulf between eventual outcome and artistic potential is so wide you can conveniently fit two or three Lagos fuel queues inside it, it’s just saddening. We need to start asking the crew the kind of questions that would encourage them to find a way to bridge that divide rather than constantly criticising them blindly.
So the question is – will Unbreakable finally help STYL Plus bridge that gap? Well, no one can say exactly, for these are early days yet.
But we’re pretty certain that there’s one person who can answer that question, and that person is the one reading this article right now! That person is you, the music buying public.

Nice article…
Styl Plus wil rise again.I think d problem was that they took a long break from d game which affected their comeback and i dont think takin residence in Abuja is d problem, darey resides there and he's not lagging behind,ty mix resides there and it hasn't stopd him from being one of the foremost producer in Naija.I ultimately believe they kind of lost touch but they'll definitely RISE AGAIN.
I weep when i compare Styl plus of those days and Styl plus of today. Well, the boys are good. I mean they ve gat the voice, skill and delivery but their problem is – They deviated from their real self to do what they see the crowd is doing. What i mean is- They substituted R&B for dancehall music, soft musical instruments (which is the real thing for their genre) for hard ones (they should try a producer like Cobhams). They substituted Lagos for Abuja. If they should go back to their former love, they will shine again. I was listening to the UNBREAKABLE album, and found out that almost every song is a dancehall song (fast paced). I don't think the album will do well, but i pray so.
Another great R&B icon who might encounter similar problems is my man Banky W. If not for Strong thing and Lagos party i wonder how the W experience would have sounded like. To me the album 'Mr Capable' is better than W experience.
T-Banks, for T-Banks Entertainment.
Styl Plus' career is DEAD! I doubt anybody will even be interested in reading this article cos they quite frankly dont care anymore… Take nothing away from ur piece tho, lovely analysis… It would have been more releavant if u wrote it 2 years ago!
STYL PLUS is the BEST guy band in NAIJA ….
one of the best art in NAIJA….
i love them
will always love them
i hope they comeback with this album…
4 yrs don waka…was one of the best jam for 2008/09….
if u guys read this…
KEEP UR HEAD UP…GOD DEY…
U ARE STILL ONE OF THE BEST…..
WAOW WHAT A LOVELY PIECE , I LOVE YOUR DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS AM PROUD YOU A NIGERIAN .BUT THE FACT IS STYL PLUS WHERE NOT REALLY SO MUCH , YOU CANT COMPARE THEM TO PLANTATION , OR EVEN TO REMEDY , IF THEY WHERE FROM THE UK OR US THEY WILL MAKE A BETTER CAREER, THE FACT IS YOU CANT JUDGE BY THE FIRST ALBUM ALONE AND THE SECOND ALBUM FOR ME WASNT SO GOOD, THEY ARE AFRICAN AND THEY HAVE INADEQUATE AFRICAN TOUCH , I THINK THE BEST THING AS THEY SAID IN THEIR NEW TRACK IS TO GO (READY TO GO ), OR MAYBE READY SPLIT UP , I SEE SHIFI AND ZEAL MAKING A GOOD CAREER"THEY CAN PUT TUNDE IN THIER BACK UP :p"
Good piece.More interesting comment by Afroragga.
Nice article,i think the guys deviated from what knew them for and that's thier greatest undoing.i hope they know comeback is not always easy.i think a visit to the library on life and time of MJ,MAJEK FSAHEK,FATHER U TURN,eltal would do them a deal of favour.Others beware
nice one,i think their greatest undoing is deviation from what they were known for and a little of pride.i hope the guys know that come back is not always easy and i think they need a visit to the library to read about lifee and times of MJ,MAJEK FASHEK,BABA FRYO eltal
I wont call myself a real fan of stylplus or a critic but i think the real problem wit the crew is that they failed to notice that the industry is no longer what it used to be before olufunmi. The industry is a big boy now. Would you compare the success 'my car' had then wit the ones tetuila songs have now? Those were the dark ages. Nigerians know better now. Also i dont think residing in the country's capital is helping them. If you're not in hollywood, then i think entertainment for you is just an hobby and not a profession. Lagos is where its happening. Collabos also push artistes faster to success. I'm sure a lotta pple cant wait to hear what M.I and 2face has to say. And r&b collabo btw stylplus and darey or a dancehall collabo featurin stylplus and psquare will see a lot of fans rushing to the stands.
Good music is good music! Period.Whoever its coming from doesn't matter. The Question one should ask is; Is Stylplus music Positive or Negative? The fact that The Unbreakable album wasn't what we expected, for Crying out loud THIS IS GOOD MUSIC!
@ KOLADE. We love stylplus staying together so we wont promote disunity for the group we love. U sound like a hater and not a lover of good music. Why are you hating?
@ AFRORAGGA! Afroragga sounds like a former embittered member of the crew.
The true meaning of being a FAN is Being fanatical about something either in a good way or a bad way.
If ur not a fan of STYLPLUS, you wouldn't be writing on this BLOG when you could've been writing something good about another artist you love on another blog. My conclussion is WE HERE ARE ALL FANS! PERIOD!

FIRST GOING THROUGH THE BLOG LET ME SEE WHO MENTIONED ME AHA Baba Terry Analytical, analytical indeed , disunity is different from going solo point of correction , many group go solo and still are together check faggie of the " black eye pea", even "wili i am" had is own thing going , its normal, destiny child came back few times again to make albums its called going solo . its helps to foster their obviously dieing career, and increase their professionalism , for me it will be ludicrous to say styl plus will rise again as styl plus :), no one is ready to listen to them again ok .and one thing am a fan of ,is good music , i had three different CDs of OLUFUNMI and i was addicted to it , so i stand by my word SHIFI and ZEAL go solo .SIMPLE AS ABC

Read through the blogs. Impressed that Nigerians are actually this passionate about Nigerian music with the historical reports and all. I'm a media person as well(on-air) and happen to have had one-on-one encounters with some members of the band in the past.Styl plus i can say was a 'good thing gone bad'.for me,they were a reference point for other Naija RnB acts.great voices,cool productions,nice musical concepts-they virtually changed the face of Nigerian music(were even going to steal my girlfriend from me with their angelic voices!). but then the quality began to drop.I don't want to over flog the issue because i believe most of what I'd like to say have already been pasted on this blog.I have not listened to the recent CD 'Unbreakable' so i cant really comment on that,but nonetheless,if the group Stylplus still wants to move to the next level,remain hot and relevant in this ever evolving Naija music industry,then there are certain moves that should be put into action;
1= While I'm not saying there's anything wrong with plying your trade from the federal capital,we may not be totally wrong if the consideration of relocating to Lagos is suggested. it may be a bit uncomfortable at first, but i believe it will pay off in the long run. This is a career. it's all about sacrifice.(unless our bloggers are right and music is all just a hobby for the group!) *Remember P Square were doing their thing at Abuja and Jos until big brother 'Engees' asked them down to the commercial nerve center-they even had to sell off their cars to pay moving bills! How did it pay off..? Jude Abaga (M.I by the way!)was sending his work of art out from Jtown to states nationwide, wowing everyone-but yet no cash or fame.people didn't even know the face! i remember him and I backstage in 2008 at Jimmy Jatt's 'Jump off' Show at Planet One Nightclub Maryland,Lagos.trying to put in a word for him to be able to perform-for free! Well,he finally moves down to Lag and results..? you and i know. Its a simple fact.In Lagos you are closer to everything, all the opportunities you need. Jeremiah Gyang is gifted and brilliant, yet we don't get much of him.why? Frank de Nero,Duncan Mighty,Six-foot-plus.. the list is endless..a whole lot of talents that are doing well but haven't quite gotten to their deserved peak. Styl plus SHOULD CONSIDER RELOCATING.
2= I believe they also need to re-brand. the performances on stage are not so impressive. To anyone! Even Westlife dances on stage!
3= They should do more cool Rnb. The way we'd always loved them. i know theirs MORE where the previous came from.(and please guys, concentrate on good producers and production. i know it may be expensive but take the advice from above and probably try some Cobhams,Dr Frabs or Jeremiah Gyang on production. You guys deserve working with people like that! if you have to do some party joints-try Don Jazzy or some producer with a great pedigree-remember,people are listening! and don't forget a couple of interesting collaborations.
4= The Videos guys. Naija don CHANGE. whether you like am or not people don dey set standard for videos. you dudes are tush..abeg no fall our hand!
5= Lastly,i dont know how true it is about the unseriousness and 'arrogancy' thingy but however it is; Tunde,Shifi and my man Zeal- remember,'Humility is a Virtue'-most especially in a game like this.
I loved you guys..still do. Bought every album(haven't bought the recent one though)and i want to see y'all back up there-where you rightfully belong.
Peace.
Its too late for these boys, its too late… Nobody's listening, Unbreakable is hot crap their previous album was equally terrible. Please, we've all moved on.. Don't waste ur time writin on this bunch
you see now! A lot haven't even heard the new songs or seen the new video. I hear una ó ! But remember, I have talked,U can say anything you like. The question you should ask yourself (those I replied with my first comment)is ''is anybody talking about you''? Either GOOD or BAD? If not, pray that someday someone will deem it fit to even notice you let alone talk about u. That's the height of it!
Me Baba terry analytical u shall know someday. For now, let me bounce off this HATE blog and log onto where people are more objective and positive
@ kolade..I see you're happy someone had something to say about your comment…You need to get a life and stop being impetuous. BLOG MODERATOR, abeg we need to set AGE LIMIT for this blog! THis guy needs parental guidance.
@ Syleena: In case you're a GIRL, I hope your heart wasn't broken by one of them cos you sound biased bitching about a gang rape. If you're a Guy, you must be gay. PERIOD!
The problem with Stylplus is too much repetition. All the band members don't have to sing and they need to keep their songs below the 4 minute mark cos they sometimes drag on 4eva losing their punch line.
Finally and most importantly, they need to ditch those ROBOTIZED vocals. Only my girl, Britney Spears can't get away with those anyday anytime.
P.S: I strongly believe they can still stage a huge comeback but they need to do some serious internal reflection. Just my 2 cents
STYLPLUS ROCKS! But I think their major problem is promo cos I Happen to know them especially their former managers T-jazz and Joey! That management pair ran them down. They were the face of the band to the administrative public, making rash decisions and building hate-will unknown to the boyz. I'm happy they're no longer with the management.
I'm most happy I dont see them on their videos anymore. The new video is a must watch. Really doing well on MTV base
"@ Baba Terry Analytical "I see you’re happy someone had something to say about your comment…You need to get a life and stop being impetuous. BLOG MODERATOR, abeg we need to set AGE LIMIT for this blog! THis guy needs parental guidance", " In case you’re a GIRL, I hope your heart wasn’t broken by one of them cos you sound biased bitching about a gang rape. If you’re a Guy, you must be gay. PERIOD!".LOL .I SEE WE REALLY NEED AGE LIMIT :), i wont BELABOR ON YOUR COMMENT,JUST LOOK AT URSELF AND ASK WHO NEEDS TO BE BLOCKED OF THE BLOG, like you know how old i am ,YOU SOUND LIKE ,,,,,,HMMM , I REST MY CASE, JUST INSULTING PEOPLE ON A BLOG , I SEE WHO NEEDS A LIFE
In as much as this article is well written, how true is it? I know the real problem with stylplus. Its not with the Music, the boys, their staying together or them splitting up. Its basically promo.Has anybody seen any video from the back and better album? NO! see what I mean. LACK OF PROMO. I guess the only promo they have come from blogs like this running them down.
@ STYLPLUS, if ever you get to read this, get a good publicist to work with and for crying out loud PROMOTE your songs cos HALF THE SONGS ON RADIO AND TV ARE NOT HALF AS GOOD AND MEANINGFUL AS YOUR WORST SONGS
Take for example TONY TETUiLA Back in the days, because of promo HE was accepted even when he couldn't sing to save a soul.
This is from a concerned FAN
P.s: At least you people have Tackled your Video Issues. The New Video is just a beauty. Did you guys pay MTVbase for playing it that much?LOL
What is this clown Olalade talkin about? this article didn't run them down, if u had read closely u'd have noticed that the writer said that ultimately, the ppl deciding the future of Styl Plus is us.
And pls dont give me that, B.S abt having good songs! Their songs suck! Ready to Go is just average & d rest of dat album is pathetic!!! It almost pains my ear listening to their music.
Whose fault is it if they dont do promo anyway??? Dont be stupid jor. Their problems are more than just promo, they lack good management, good music etc.
Ride on NET!!!
LAFFIN MY ASS OUT!!!!
JEEZ, U GUYZ R SSICK!! I LOVE NAIJA MEN!!!
luvly yans by kolade n afroragga. but i really dnt get y mr. baba terry analytical is wildin out. if he's so pissd dat naija hav abandond dem styl plus, he shd hit d streets and shove copies of d unbreakable album down d throats of unsuspectin passers-by. totally unnecessary words from sum1 self-styled "analytical"
Ready 2 go is so cliche and boring but I kinda like Baby Mo. It's got HIT POTENTIAL written all over it.
If it were to be accompanied with a hilarious video, it will sure do sell especially amongst the Ibos.
Hello All,
i would quickly like to point out something. There has been complaints that style plus was run down by their crew and management.
However, they have changed both their managers and their crew, and taken things into their own hands.
How come then, that their last release, Unbreakable, has been universally rated as their worst.
Objectively, it shows that the problem is THEM, not those surrounding them. They used to dance on stage, but as they got arrogant, they stopped.
They used to be fan friendly and conduct many interviews, but as fame got to their head, that too seems to have stopped. A journalist friend of mine told me she kept on getting posted when she contacted the boys directly for interviews.
In terms of analysis, i think afroragga has the best analysis. I watched the performance in front of yaradua on NTA. it was lame! not even a shout out to Mr president unlike Olu Maintain. I also saw them at a show(i think it was rhythm unplugged in lagos) where they raked for the dj because the mic was not working properly. I thought the reaction was unwarranted. tell me, when last did you watch style plus perform on stage, and get really excited? its been ages! they just grew complacent.
I think it has less to do with living in abuja(though that is a factor) and more to do with bad personalities. Great singers no doubt, but good voices are not everything.
This their new video, is good, better than their old works (though in fairness, their old works were pretty great for their time when they came out) and hopefully, it will give them a much needed boost. Problem is that the songs on the album are not as sweet as their previous works and for that, they can blame no one but themselves!
You can only pretend for a while. eventually, your true personality will shine through
Styleplus si cool. I think we should give the new unbreakable some more time to hit.
But maybe they should release solo albums. If they are slacking we will then see which of the 3 of them is the weak link. I think zeal will do very well as a solo artiste
hi everyone..
nice forum, I wish I had seen it before carol just told me now.
Busky manboy is a clown, i have been laughing since! thanks busky.
lets not get personal , baba terry how far? why the vexing and personal attacks on others? This is a forum for free ideas, brother . Just tackle the points.
The unbreakable album is ok, nobody is perfect, even michale jackson. So it is not by force for stylplus to have another olufumi hit everytime.
I dont like the blaming abuja and blaming stylplus crew for the general fall. the same abuja and stylplus crew have been there from the beginning when all was good.
STRAIGHTtalkar, and kolade got it right. since stylplus crew broke up in 2008, that is when things started going bad with BACK and BETTER (no video up till now) so it cannot be the crews fault in dis case since it is stylplus handling its own matters by themselves. I dont know personally how arrogant or spoilt stylplus is, but honestly most musicians are like that so I am not surprised.
afroraga r u a journalist? u soiund professional. what do u predict about mo hits crew in future?
peace out
they are trying and i love them i bought the unbreakable album 3 times already so i pray it goes well for them ,lotta pple criticising them, i have been their fan for years nw and i love them with passion..
I think wat cause dis decline in popularity is their location ,abuja;lack of promo-no collabo with oda star artiste lik 2face,p square e.t.c drive me crazy was hit cos they feature 2shot;concerning d recent album some of the contents are good like baby mo,if i could runaway, ready 2 go are potential hits.anyway whatever them say THEY ARE THE BEST MUSICIAN THAT MAKE SENSE 2 ME IN NIGERIA PROBABLY 3RD IN D WORLD-let these people view get 2 them so they could amend-long live styl plus music
I THINK THE PROBLEM IS FROM WE THE NIGERIANS, THA FACT ABOUT IT IS THAT STYL PLUS DO SING GOOD MUSICS, MUSIC THAT ARE EMOTIONAL AND THAT GOOD TO BE LISTING. BUT NIGERIA TODAY ONLY CARE ABOUT PARTY JAMZ.
STYL PLUS AND ONE OF THE BEST MUSICIAN WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY BUT BECAUSE OF THEIR LOW MENTALITY OF THE PEOPLE SUCH MUSIC LIKE when u smile,in their 3rd album and in their recent album unbreakable ARE MUSIC TO AWORDED.
.;. I am very thankful to this topic because it really gives up to date information .*:
Haven gone thru all d comments all I wnt 2 say is Stylplus u can rise again no matter aw many times u fall or aw deep or low u fell. All u nid do is get up! Dust urself look @ where u av fallen learn from it, look around u see where others are, put in more effort dan ur contemporaries & don’t eva give up even wen d situatn is like dis stylplus. I believe it’s beta late dan neva. Dere is room 4 second chance. Don’t eva give up! Quitters don’t win! Winners neva quit!!!
What i don’t understood is if truth be told how you’re not really a lot more smartly-liked than you may be right now. You’re so intelligent. You know thus considerably in terms of this matter, made me in my opinion consider it from so many numerous angles. Its like women and men are not involved unless itˇs one thing to do with Girl gaga! Your individual stuffs outstanding. Always care for it up!
I wish I could find more info on this subject. Any tips?
well it really breaks my heart that Style plus after all these great songs and glory should fall just let that. frankly speak after their back and better album precisely 4 years don waka, i never knew they have another album lol. I just decided to check on them to know their latest update after repeatedly watching the track “Home within your heart” from their expression album, and just got myself to this blog. well Chigoziem thank you for the wonderful article. For the Forum you all have spoken well and thank u all for ur advise, i just hope that they in question (Style Plus)will see and read this. well for me, I love style plus and their music pattern, infact their RnB is unbeatable, I even liken style plus to the Alone4one group, and Boyz 2 Men.They are the pride of Naija along Faze,P Square and 2Face for the year 2000 And, New Music Era. Well, for the fact that Onitsha and environs didnt notice their last album simply means that they need a big time PROMOTION. I dey throw respect to Afroragga, T bank and Vic d Virus una comments are very reasonable. For the ill behaviours, the one thing i will say to Tunde, Shifi and My Guy Zeal (De SPICE Among the group) is to change if what have been said here is true and u guys should try much to do Collabo. bcos Collabo na part of prtomotion.
May unity, strenght and great insight and inspiration uphold you STYLE PLUS thats my prayer for U.
Best Regards,
Peace.
This is a nice article that hooks you on. i was only praying that the end would have been more beautiful than the beginning. all the same we can make this come true by praying for the STYL-PLUS CREW. we are with you guys and we pray that you will shoot up again. BIG UPS TO STTYL-PLUS.
COME BACK STYL-PLUS
