If Nigerian music was to be likened to one giant race course and your favourite artistes were to become the runners, then I guess it’s safe to call Darey that mysterious finalist who confidently strides forward with so much intent and determination before the gun even sounds.
While many of his contemporaries are content with sticking to the tried and tested, Darey consistently seeks new avenues for expression through music and performance.
Stroke Me, the first single off his forth-coming album, sees Darey continue his gallop as far away from anything you’d typically hear on Nigerian radio as possible while at the same time, not leaving the listener with the impression that he somehow possesses dual citizenship from Nigeria and musical Mars.
Stroke Me plays up Darey’s almost unfair advantage of an expansive vocal range while relying on his ever-present wit to create a harmony so sweet that it could result in auditory diabetes if listened to for long periods.
On the fresh cut, released on Monday December 7, the heartthrob playfully urges his female pursuers to stroke every part of his body, well except his… ahem!
Darey outsources production duties to Mo Hits’ head honcho Don Jazzy but still retains the services of Soul Muzik’s in-house duo of Password and Del-B. Stroke Me was penned by Darey, Kenneth O Kenneth and Don Jazzy and the bouncy percussion heavy sound was undeniably inspired by Tango.
And so Darey trots away yet again, with his face pressed against the wind of the status quo and his back to the competition.
If Nigerians respond to the R&B giant’s upcoming yet-to-be-titled LP the same way they did to his multiple award-winning sophomore effort un.DAREY.ted, then it won’t be long before that mysterious finalist suddenly becomes the bonafide leader of the pack.
Darey’s third album is due early next year.
