Veteran producer ID Cabasa has shared a nostalgic, first-hand account of how “Street Credibility” came together, shedding light on the contributions of 9ice and 2Baba, as well as the cultural significance of Festac in Nigeria’s music history.
“Street credibility was first recorded with 9ice’s chorus and verse at Codedtunes studio in Akoka,” ID Cabasa recalled. “Then we took a mini studio to 2Baba, who was so gracious to record without any drama. The hotel we recorded 2Baba’s part was in Festac. Myself, 9ice and Modef, who was the manager, drove down to Festac for the recording.” He described the session as seamless and memorable: “It was an interesting session but not dramatic. 2Baba also was kind enough to be in the video without any drama. 2Baba’s humility is next to none.”
Reflecting on the atmosphere of that era, he added: “2Baba was surrounded by lots of friends that night, which is something lacking today. Festac was a Mecca for the music industry then. That night was fun, and the way 2Baba recorded was so random but intentional.” Emphasising the area’s legacy, ID Cabasa noted, “I think @AOT2 needs to write an exposition on the impact of Festac town on Afrobeats. Festac gave us Plantashun Boiz, Ruff Rugged & Raw, Sound Sultan, W4, Azadus and many superstars.”
