One of the longest serving statesmen in Asia, Singapore‘s Lee Kuan Yew has passed away today, March 22, 2015, at the age of 91.
He was the country’s first prime minister, and also widely regarded as the founding father credited with creating modern Singapore.
Born September 16, 1923, Lee served as the nation’s prime minister for over three decades, transforming the poverty-stricken, third-world country from a small port city to a wealthy global nation during his time.
According to BBC’s report, his death was announced by his son, the current prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, after he passed away peacefully at the Singapore General Hospital. Lee Kuan Yew had reportedly been admitted at the hospital with severe pneumonia for several weeks before his death today.
