Aston Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov, has been voted the club’s player of the year despite his ill condition.
The Bulgarian international played for the struggling team before being diagnosed for acute leukaemia last month and he is currently receiving treatment.
Unfortunately, Petrov could not attend the awards ceremony held on May 1 at Villa Park but gave his thanks to the club via video message.
‘Sorry I can’t be with you but I’ve got a little issue I need to fight. I hope you haven’t given me this award because of my situation. I thought I had a quite okay season. But I think we all deserve this award because we’ve worked so hard this season.‘
Meanwhile, Stephen Ireland has also been named as the supporters’ player of the year, while striker Andreas Weimann, who scored vital goals against Fulham and Stoke, was named young player of the year.
