She told Metro UK Guilty Pleasures: ‘At that time the song came from a good place so it always reminds me of that place.
‘And I love the song.’
However, the blonde beauty recently sparked rumours that the break-up had been far from amicable after admitting the ‘Under Control’ hitmaker banned her from performing the song at the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles last month.
She previously said: ‘For anybody who doesn’t understand how it works, he wrote and produced the song. So he has to approve anything TV-wise for anybody who doesn’t get it. And obviously he owns the rights to it and he didn’t approve the Teen Choice Awards.’
Rita – who had been planning the performance for ‘about a month’ – wasn’t shocked by Calvin’s ‘last minute change’ of heart.
She said: ‘I could have got told a few weeks earlier, you know. That would have been nice. It was a last minute change, but you know what, it happens and we move on and move forward … It is what it is, man. You know, you write a song with somebody, and I guess there’s some stuff that comes with it … Everything happens for a reason, that’s how I look at it.’
Meanwhile, the ‘How We Do’ hitmaker is set to release her second studio album and has penned even more songs that reflect her personal life.
She explained: ‘I’ve written a lot of the songs and they are as honest as possible.
‘It’s about my love life and what I love to do and how I love to go out and all that stuff.’
