Real Madrid now find themselves in second place in the La Liga title race following their thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Las Palmas on Wednesday night.
Following a shock 2-1 loss at Valencia and needing to come back from two goals down to beat Villarreal 3-2 in their two previous league games, Real Madrid struggled again and lost top spot in the league as a result.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s late brace helped secure a point for his team, which was reduced to 10-man after Gareth Bale was sent off in the 47th minute for his rash treatment of an opponent.
Spanish midfielder Isco had put Madrid ahead but Las Palmas equalised in the 10th minute before opening a 3-1 lead with two goals up within minutes of Bale’s red card.
The score at that point was a harsh reflection on Real and Alvaro Morata especially, with the striker seeing two goals in the opening 10 minutes disallowed.
Morata also had a third goal ruled out later in the game and saw another effort come off the crossbar on a frustrating night for him and Real Madrid.
But Ronaldo was on hand to spare Zinedine Zidane‘s side, scoring a penalty in the 86th minute before heading in an equaliser for Madrid a minute to the end.
With a game in hand, Los Blancos are now on 56 points after 24 matches played in the ongoing 2016/17 La Liga title race.
Arch-rivals Barcelona top the table with 57 points, though the Blaugrana have played a game more.
Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez each scored as Barça thrashed Sporting Gijon 6-1 at Camp Nou to revive their dreams of defending the Spanish league title.
Winning the league would serve as a good way for Blaugrana head coach, Luis Enrique to end his time with the club. Enrique announced he will be leaving at the end of this season – three years after his appointment in May 2014.
The former Barcelona midfielder and Celta Vigo coach won the treble (Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey) in his first season.
But it would take a mammoth performance in two weeks time at home to PSG – who lead 4-0 ahead of the Champions League last 16 second leg match – to keep alive his chance of repeating his 2014/15 treble-winning feat.
