Born Lee Alexander McQueen on March 17, 1969 in Lewisham, London.
He grew up in East London and became chief designer at Givenchy before founding his own label and receiving a CBE from Queen Elizabeth for his contributions to fashion.
McQueen was openly gay and said he realized his sexual orientation when he was just six years old.
Some of McQueen’s accomplishments included being one of the youngest designers to achieve the title, ‘British Designer of the Year’, which he won four times between 1996 and 2003.
McQueen’s death was announced on the afternoon of February 11, 2010. In the morning, his housekeeper found him hanging at his home on Green Street, London. Paramedics were called and they pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to new reports, his older sister, Janet claimed her late brother made several attempts to take his own life before finally committing suicide 5 years ago.
