The Nigerian police on Friday arrested and detained Mohammed Olaniyan, the president of University of Lagos (UNILAG) students union (ULSU).
ULSU’s spokesperson was also arrested.
The arrests followed peaceful protests by students who demanded basic amenities – water and electricity.
The ULSU leaders were later released but had their phones seized by the police, we gathered.
Following the protests, UNILAG authorities suspended academic activities till further notice.
Students were told they had till 10am on Friday to vacate the Akoka campus of the school.
But students have, Friday, sealed the gates and are refusing to leave.
Some of them said they’d need more time to pack their things from the hostels. Some say they are stranded as the cost of transportation, due to Nigeria’s current power crisis, is too high.
A source told NewsroomNG soldiers would come help the police evict the students once it’s 10am.
The police are already camped at the school’s gates and within its premises.
Students have mounted roadblocks within the campus in preparation of a showdown we hope never happens.
