Diva! What Diva?
Do you mean the way I sometimes wear my hair like I’m fresh out of an 80’s Disco Hall? Nah, that’s just me! Or do you mean my pretty out-of-this-world stage performances? That’s just my art. Perhaps it’s my choice of clothes? I mean, gosh my colours are so bright I could single-handedly #lightupnigeria if I wanted to. But nah, that’s just my style. You see, I’m really not trying to be a diva at all; I’m just being myself.
Okay so she didn’t exactly win West African Idols, but don’t they say (s)he who laughs last, laughs best? She may have lost the top prize at the West Africa Idols, but Omawumi is far from being a loser. What more evidence do you need than a growing catalogue of awards, correct set of videos, and a well-put-together debut offering?
Omawumi can certainly laugh now; after all she has found a person who can match her bucket load of creative energy in Kemi Adetiba of Dragonfly Productions, and together they’ve created a video for Today na Today that is visually appealing while at the same time containing a storyline that even a genius (like myself, of course) couldn’t fully decipher even after 15 odd views.
The video starts off with Omawumi in full stealth mode, descending a fence with such dexterity that got me wondering what Superwoman’s occupation before music might have been. In full bandit mode, Oma then dashes into an undisclosed building to retrieve some vaulted ‘treasure’ while under the intense gaze of security cameras, night vision and all.
The video climaxes with Oma delivering a rousing performance in a tightly-packed club soon after successfully completing her mission. Omawumi certainly doesn’t spare the palette in this video, painting the video with all the primary, secondary and tertiary colours; and how can I forget to mention those gorgeous African beads?
My only grouse with this video is the seeming lack of connection between the lyrics of Today Na Today and the video’s theme. It’s almost like watching one of those Telenovelas where the Spanish actors are saying one thing but their mouths are heading 100km/h in the opposite direction. That not withstanding, Today Na Today is visually on point and will only serve to further Omawumi’s thriving career.

Just like Jennifer Hudson et Adam Lambert (American Idol), she proves you don't have to be the overall winner to have a successful career. So far all the songs i've heard from her debut sound great. I only wish she'd kept most of them within 4 minutes as they sometimes drag forever and lose their oomph!
