Following the delay by the Federal Government in fulfilling the agreement over the new Teachers Enhanced Salary Structure (TESS), the Nigerian Union of Teachers have threatened to go on an indefinite strike come September this year if nothing is done.
Confirming the intended strike action, the President of the body, Comrade Michael Olukoya stated that the impending action was the outcome of government’s failure to meet up with the agreed increase of teachers’ salaries by 27.5%
Speaking in Abuja recently, Olukoya told news men that the strike would be organised across the 11 states of Abia, Cross River, Nassarawa, Delta, Lagos, Ekiti, Kogi, Ebonyi, Ogun, Enugu and katsina.
He explained that the strike which should have commenced on July 23, 2012 was delayed due to the appeals made by the Minister of education, Governors, Federal Legislation and well-meaning Nigerians.
He further said that the plight of students were also considered at the time and it was decided that the strike be postponed to enable them round up their examinations.
