There are very few things that can keep Nigerians up at night watching TV – football, music concerts, and waiting for Burna Boy to win a Grammy.
Social media and traditional media were all interested in talking about one thing, Burna Boy’s possible Grammy win. It is his second nomination in the Best World Music Album category. The excitement was palpable.
Speaking with his team, Bukola Sawyerr-Izeogu, CEO of Bukihq Media, told Netng that the team was in high hopes. “We’re confident,” she said. “We put in the work. We put in the work on the album, with the distribution, put in the work with the publicity, and everything. So we are feeling pretty good.”
Just as they anticipated, Burna Boy won his first Grammy with his fifth album, Twice As Tall, for Best Global Music Album. The win was especially prized because he lost to Angelique Kidjo in the same category last year. This year he went head to head with global artistes Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar, and Grammy Award-winner Tinariwen.
Femi Falodun, CEO of ID Africa (owners of Netng) says it’s no surprise Burna Boy took home a Grammy tonight. He says, “Burna Boy’s Grammy win doesn’t come as a surprise, seeing the incredible success he’s had over the past few years. His win is further proof of the influence that Nigerian music and art is having on global pop music and culture. It’s a joy to behold.”
Other Nigerians have expressed their exhilaration at his win, with many praising the African Giant.
