Nigeria made history at the 63rd Grammy Awards ceremony as Wizkid and Burna Boy each took home their first awards at the show.
Before the ceremony began, social media was buzzing with excitement. Many Nigerians stayed up late to the wee hours of the morning to find out if the two artistes nominated this year would finally bring home the award, and they were not disappointed.
Burna Boy took home his first Grammy for his highly acclaimed album, ‘Twice As Tall’ in the Best Global Music Album category. He went toe to toe against some of the biggest acts across the world. They include Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar, and Grammy-award-winner Tinariwen. It was a particularly astounding win as he had lost the opportunity last year to legendary Beninoise singer Angelique Kidjo.
Before Burna Boy won the award, his team shared with Netng that they believed they put in enough effort to bring home the Grammy. A member of his team shared, “We are confident we put in the work. Put in the work with a good album. Put in the work with the distribution, with the publicity, and everything. So we are feeling pretty good”.
Wizkid also took home his first Grammy win for his collaboration with Beyonce on Brown Skin Girl. They won in the Best Music Video category against Future, Drake, Anderson Paak, Harry Styles, and Woodkid. This was his second nomination after he and Drake lost the Album of the Year award to Adele in 2016.
Nigerians have taken to social media to celebrate this brilliant win, with many pouring out praises on Wizkid and Burna Boy.
