Late Nigerian goal king, Rashidi Yekini is finally being celebrated 3 years after he lost his life in a controversial manner.
The League Management Company, the body in charge of NPFL on Monday, July 13, 2015 said the Highest Goal Scorer Award will be named after the former Victoria Setubal striker who scored Nigeria’s ever first goal at the World Cup in 1994.
According the chairman of LMC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, the body decided to immortalise the late striker as a way of encouraging players in the league to strive also become national heroes.
Rashidi Yekini died on May 4, 2012 after a brief illness but he remains the highest goal scorer for the Nigerian National team after scoring 37 goals in different competitions while playing for the Super Eagles.
Yekini, whose celebration at the 1994 World Cup after he scored Nigeria’s first ever goal remains one of the most colorful celebrations at the mundial, was named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993.
