The newly-appointed chief executive of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), Danjuma Dadu has promised to combat piracy in Nigeria’s film industry.
The NFC boss made this promise during an interactive session with Nollywood stake-holders at the NFC zonal office in Ikoyi Lagos on July 2 2013.
In his message, Danjuma whose appointment had earlier caused uproar in the movie sector urged practitioners to ‘consolidate on the achievements of the industry to further its growth’.
He also promised to focus on funding and training for professionals in marketing and distribution, adding that the corporation will also collaborate with the National Copyright Commission to tackle the menace of piracy and rights infringement.
Dadu also stressed the importance of regulating film releases stating that, ‘there must be control in order to add value to films; we cannot just be releasing films anyhow.’
Nollywood is the third largest film industry in the world, producing and releasing over 1000 movies per year, although distribution and infrastructure continue to be major challenges.
